India, on the other hand, had begun the tour with a nine-wicket hammering at the hands of Meg Lanning’s side, before bouncing back in the next game, taking the match to the last delivery before a no-ball by Jhulan Goswami allowed the hosts to scrape through. The next game also went down to the wire, but this time it was Goswami redeeming herself as she hit the winning boundary to end Australia’s 26-ODI winning streak. Australia in reply, managed only 241 for the loss of nine wickets before Lanning decided to follow suit and declare the innings, in an attempt to make a game out of a game that appeared destined for a draw. India, in their second essay put up 135 on the board for the loss of three wickets, with Shafali Verma and Punam Raut scoring fifties, giving their bowlers a target of 272 to defend in less than 40 overs. Though they lost two early wickets with 36 on board, the two captains ended up shaking hands and agreeing to a draw by the time the final hour on the fourth day was to begin. The T20I series will see a change of guard with Harmanpreet Kaur, who hasn’t played a game in the tour so far thanks to a thumb injury, taking over the reigns of the side from Mithali. Additionally, the team will also miss out on Jhulan’s services, with the veteran seamer having retired from the shortest format. That brings us to the end of our coverage of the first of the three T20Is between Australia and India at Gold Coast. Though they lost four wickets at regular intervals, India were certainly galloping along nicely after being asked to bat, with everyone in the batting lineup pitching in with valuable runs. Jemimah Rodrigues will feel hard done by not to complete her half-century, though she’ll be happy to be back among the runs on her comeback into the national side, and will have made the No 3 slot in the shortest format her own.
The action resumes on Saturday with India now facing the challenge of having to win each of their two remaining games if they are to win the multi-format series. If their performance today as well as in the one-off Test and the last two ODIs is anything to go by, Harmanpreet and Co certainly have the firepower to pull back-to-back wins and end their tour on a high.

She’s off to an expensive start, conceding two boundaries in three balls to Ghosh — the first one nearly resulting in a catch for Wareham at deep midwicket. Single collected off the fourth and fifth balls before Ghosh collects her third boundary of the over with a thick outside edge past the keeper. 14 from the over. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, India are very much galloping along at the moment.

What a start for Georgia Wareham, dismissing Yastika Bhatia off her very first delivery as the southpaw holes out to long on while looking to further accelerate the scoring rate for the visitors. Molineux returns. Both Rodrigues and Kaur collect a boundary in this over, before the latter’s trapped LBW by a full, straight delivery to depart for 12. Despite the loss of three wickets, has been a decent start so far which can translate to a big score if Rodrigues, Bhatia and the rest are able to build a big partnership or two between them.

What a bowling change by Meg Lanning, bringing Ash Gardner in place of Sophie Molineux, as she gets rid of both in-form openers Mandhana and Verma in a space of four deliveries, while getting hit for a six by the latter in the process. With two new batters in Rodrigues and skipper Kaur in the crease, Australia now have the chance to dictate terms in the powerplay.
OUT! Two wickets in her first over for Ash Gardner! What a start this has turned out to be for the off-spinner. Verma looks for consecutive hits over the fence, but doesn’t get the same distance and elevation as she did in the previous delivery, hitting it straight down Georgia Wareham’s throat. IND 37/2
