Jonny Bairstow smashed a breathtaking 45-ball century to help Punjab Kings (PBKS) pull off a record chase against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash in Kolkata on Friday.
PBKS bounced back from a string of four defeats in ruthless fashion on Friday as they not only pulled off the highest successful chase in T20 history, chasing down a target of 262 set by KKR, but did so with eight wickets and as many deliveries to spare.
The Englishman was ably supported by explosive all-rounder Shashank Singh (68 not out off 28 balls) and opening partner Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 20 balls), with the Kings barely breaking a sweat throughout their chase and staying ahead of the asking rate, going past the finish line in a canter as a result.

Punjab thus broke the record for the highest successful chase across all T20 cricket, which had previously belonged to South Africa when they successfully chased down a target of 259 set by West Indies in a T20I that took place in March last year.

262 — Punjab Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata, 27 April 2024
259 — South Africa vs West Indies in Centurion, 26 March 2023

The 250-mark has now been breached a total of seven times in what is turning out to be record-breaking 17th season of the Indian Premier League so far.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have breached that mark thrice this season, breaking the record for the highest total in IPL history not once but twice while KKR have gone past it twice now, having posted 272/7 against Delhi Capitals in a thumping 106-run victory earlier this season.
PBKS and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have breached 250 once this season, with the latter also posting 262 — for the loss of seven wickets in a losing cause against SRH, who had smashed 287/3 .
