IPL Retention 2025 Highlights: DC and Rishabh Pant to part ways, says report; Kohli could captain RCB

Franchises will not officially give away their list of retained players till tomorrow (31 October) evening, but the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have given fans the chance to discover possible player retentions.

In other news apart from the IPL retentions, Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warrriorz have traded England’s Dani Wyatt-Hodge to Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the 2025 season.

A franchise can get a player from their 2024 team by using the RTM card in case that player is bought by a different franchise in the mega auction.

However, a new twist has been introduced since the RTM rule was last used at a mega auction in 2018. In the 2025 mega auction, if a team wants to buy back a player using the RTM option, the franchise that placed the winning bid will have another chance to increase their offer to any amount. In that case, the player’s former team must match this new bid if they wish to buy him back.

All 10 IPL franchises have to share their final players’ retention list by 5 PM IST on 31 October.

What time will the IPL retention list be made public?

The 2025 IPL retention lists are expected to be made public around the same time as the deadline which is 5 PM IST on 31 October.

Where can we live stream of IPL retention lists announcement?
The IPL retention lists can be live streamed on Jio Cinema App and website. The IPL retention programme would start from 4.30 PM IST. Star Sports will also run a show on IPL retentions from 4.30 PM IST.

There are reports that Rishabh Pant may not be retained by DC as he wants captaincy and the management thinks otherwise, but Harbhajan Singh feels Delhi will retain Pant along with Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

“We have heard a lot of speculation on whether Rishabh Pant will be retained or not. Time will tell, but if I was a part of the management there, then I would have retained him. Rishabh Pant should be retained. Axar Patel should be retained. Stubbs should be retained. And the 4th player to be retained will be Fraser McGurk. And if you want to retain the 5th player, then it could be Mitch Marsh. Apart from that, I think there is no other player that you would want to retain. Out of those 5 players, I think Delhi Capitals should retain at least 4 of them,” Harbhajan told Star Sports.

Harbhajan Singh feels Mumbai Indians will retain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav. He thinks Tilak Sharma or Nehal Wadhera will also be retained.

“Mumbai Indians is a team that hasn’t played well in the last two to three years. They’ve been a champion team, a very good team, and as far as I know, they will definitely think of building a team for the future. But that doesn’t mean they won’t add experienced players this year. Last year, they made Hardik Pandya captain, and I think he will definitely be retained. Jasprit Bumrah will be retained, Suryakumar Yadav will be retained, and the question remains whether Rohit Sharma will be retained,” Harbhajan Singh told Star Sports.

GT likely to retain captain Shubman Gill, star spinner Rashid Khan and left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan ahead of the IPL mega auction.

“Shubman, Rashid and Sai will be retained by the franchise,” said an IPL source to news agency PTI.

Uncapped Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia are also on GT’s radar

An IPL team can retain a maximum of six players, either through retention or the Right-To-Match (RTM) card during the 2025 mega auction. Out of the retained players, a maximum of five can be capped players while two players at most can be uncapped.

How many foreigners can be retained?

A franchise can pick only foreigners in their retained players list.

Who are the uncapped players?

Any player who has not played for his national team will be counted as an uncapped player. Also, a capped Indian player who has not played an international match in the last five years or does not have a central contract with BCCI will be considered an uncapped player. ( Full Explanation ).
