The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to undergo a second reset in less than three years’ time with a mega auction scheduled to take place in a months’ time, reportedly in the Middle East for the second consecutive year. Mega auctions are the IPL’s way of ensuring that there is a constant rotation of players within the league and that franchise owners do not hold on to players for far too long barring those who form the nucleus of the team.

The upcoming mega auction will be the sixth in IPL history, with the previous ones having taken place in 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2022. The gap between the 2022 and 2024 mega auctions, however, is the shortest in the league’s history, and is an issue that had been brought up by team owners during a meeting with the BCCI at the board’s Mumbai headquarters in July earlier this year.
Before the sixth IPL mega auction gets underway next month, franchises have to submit a list of retained players to the league’s governing council and release the rest of the squad into the player pool.

What are the retention rules announced by BCCI for this year’s mega auction?
Teams can retain up to six players from their existing squad, either via direct retention or through Right To Match (RTM), which returns for this year’s mega auction after last being used in 2017. Teams can pick a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. Six is the highest number of retentions allowed in IPL history.
Additionally, the IPL has not set a cap on the number of foreign players that can be retained, meaning all five capped and two uncapped players can be overseas players, however unlikely the case.

As for RTM, it comes with a slight modification this year – franchises that placed the highest bid at the auction for a player can make one last bid after said player’s previous team decides to make use of their RTM card. The franchise making use of RTM will then have to match the new bid before securing the player they had released into the auction pool in the first place.
