David Warner is the most successful overseas batter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history, but the swashbuckling Australia opener was shown no love from the franchises at the age of 38 as the former Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper went unsold at the IPL Auction 2025 in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia. Warner, however, was not the only big name to go unsold. England veteran pacer James Anderson, who had registered in IPL Auction for the first time, also went unsold. So did emerging talent Prithvi Shaw.

Only 25, Shaw has already played 12 internationals for India but has been struggling with injury issues and form for a while and that seems to have played a role in him not getting sold at the IPL Auction 2025.

The list of top names missing out on bids or teams is pretty long as former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who once led SRH to the IPL final, was also not given a chance along with his teammate Daryl Mitchell, who has been one of the best performers in international cricket lately.

Sarfaraz Khan’s entry into the Indian Test team in 2024 did not work in his favour as the batter went unsold yet again. Some surprises came in Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini going unsold as Indian pacers are always in demand but they could not find any takers.

Even overseas bowlers who have won matches on their own and have been proven performers in IPL, like Naveen-ul-Haq, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, were not shown any love from the IPL franchises.

Overall, only 283 players out of 577 went under the hammer across the two days of IPL Auction 2025 at the Abadi Al Johar Arena. 182 players were successful in landing deals with the teams including 62 overseas players. All teams together spent Rs 639.15 crore over the two days.
