The Indian Premier League (IPL) retention deadline added more excitement to Diwali evening in India as franchises paid big bucks to retain their best players, but a few top names were also released in the auction pool. Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged as the most expensive player as he was retained for Rs 23 crore, while Virat Kohli and Nicholas Pooran were paid Rs 21 crore respectively by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Overall a total of 46 players including 36 Indians were retained by 10 franchises ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were the only teams to fill all six retention quotas while Punjab Kings (PBKS) retained the least number of players (2), both uncapped.

This also means that PBKS will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with a massive purse of Rs 110.5 crore and have four right-to-match (RTM) cards in their kitty. RCB have an auction purse of Rs 83 crore which is second-highest as they have retained just three players followed by Delhi Capitals (Rs 73 crore) who decided to release captain Rishabh Pant.
All IPl teams had an auction purse of Rs 120 crore.

The IPL 205 mega auction as per reports will take place in the third or fourth week of November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
