“Sanju Samson for sure, second number will be Jos Buttler because he’s been in fantastic form, one of the best hitters going around especially if you are talking about white ball cricket, so you don’t want to miss out on that wicket-keeper batsman, who can bat up the order and down the order as well," Pathan said. “The other guy, people might be tempted for Ben Stokes because he’s a wonderful all-rounder, but I think I would put Jofra Archer in the same category as Jasprith Bumrah because you don’t find many bowlers like that. So, I definitely would like Rajasthan Royals to retain Jofra Archer, and the fourth one, I am very tempted for Yashasvi Jaiswal because he’s a young guy, who’s shown a lot of potential, and he could be the guy you could invest in.”

“Obviously, when it comes to the auction, they’ll be looking for a leader, that’s one thing for sure. The guys who I think they will look for retention, Virat Kohli number 1 for sure, Maxwell number 2. I think the two other guys who I would like to see get retained, because it’s slightly tricky, one because you have guys like Devdutt Paddikal, Chahal, Mohammed Siraj as well as Harshal Patel, who’s been a Purple Patel for them, so he’s been a consistent performer. So, out of those four, I would go for Chahal as well as Siraj because they offer different bowling skills. He can give you the new ball and he can give you those yorkers as well at the same time. Yes, Harshal Patel will be a big talking point as well, but if RCB thinks he’s got the skill to do really well at the Chinnaswamy Stadium regularly, then in place of Siraj, they might go for Harshal Patel,” Irfan Pathan said.

Likely Delhi Capitals retentions according to PTI:

DC are set to retain captain Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje and Prithvi Shaw. The report also says that Shreyas Iyer is leaving and would be heading to the auction pool. The franchise might look to buy back R Ashwin and Kagiso Rabada.

Likely Mumbai Indians retentions according to PTI:

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will be the first two names on the retention list, according to the PTI report. There could be a toss-up between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan while Kieron Pollard is also in the pecking order. Hardik Pandya hasn’t been bowling much and hence might not be retained and the franchise would look to buy him back in the auction.

Likely Chennai Super Kings retentions according to PTI:

It looks more or less sorted for CSK. MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja are the likely retentions according to PTI. The tough call will come down to Faf du Plessis, who has been providing them good starts consistently along with Gaikwad, or all-rounder Moeen Ali who came up with impact performances up the batting order and in spin bowling in IPL 2021.

Likely Sunrisers Hyderabad retentions according to PTI:

After a fallout with David Warner, SRH are unlikely to retain the Australia batter according to the report. Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan are the two players that look set to be retained.

They will need to make a decision on whether to retain Bhuvneshwar Kumar or T Natarajan and build their bowling unit around them or start totally afresh.

Likely Royal Challengers Bangalore retentions according to PTI:

The Franchise is set to retain Virat Kohli according to the PTI report. Glenn Maxwell, who had a good season with the RCB in IPL 2021, is likely to be retained along with seasoned veteran Yuzvendra Chahal. It will be a battle between Harshal Patel and Mohammad Siraj for the fourth retention spot.

Likely Rajasthan Royals retentions according to PTI:

Captain Sanju Samson is likely to be retained. While the report says that the franchise is in two minds about retaining Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal too is under consideration.

That same Indian Express report states that Mumbai Indians, CSK’s major rivals, will retain their talismanic skipper Rohit Sharma and pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Negotiations are on with star West Indian performer Kieron Pollard on possibly retaining him, while Ishan Kishan also looks like possible retention.

However, the five-time champions are aiming to release Suryakumar Yadav, and then attempt to buy him back at the auction pool, the report adds.

Chennai Super Kings: As per a  report  in The Indian Express, four time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are likely to retain captain MS Dhoni for as many as three seasons.

What is the salary cap?

The salary cap for all 10 teams will be at Rs 90 crores. However, based on the number of retentions, deductions would apply. Rs 42 crore will be deducted from the funds in case of four retentions, Rs 33 crore in case of three, Rs 24 crore in case of two, and just in case of one retention, Rs 14 crore.

What are IPL retention rules?

The eight current franchises will be able to retain a maximum of four players which includes a maximum three Indians and two overseas players. The two new teams will be able to select a maximum of three players, including a maximum of two Indians and one overseas player before IPL 2022 Auctions take place.
