India vs Australia, Highlights, 4th Test at Brisbane, Day 4, Full Cricket Score: Play abandoned due to rain; visitors need 324 runs to win

FirstCricket Staff January 18, 2021, 12:52:11 IST

Alright, so the play has been abandoned on Day 4 due to rain. It is still pouring at Gabba. We have lost around 27 overs again today, with one more day to go and even if we start half an hour early, we won’t be able to see recovering these overs tomorrow. So India need to bat out 98 overs tomorrow. They are 4/0 currently. Australia batted well to set India a target of 328 earlier. Siraj completed his first five-for and let this day be just about him and the Indian bowlers. They were seen as an inexperienced attack, and no one hoped a lot from them, they were rather expected to struggle but Siraj led from the front, Natarajan bowled with heart, Thakur showed his first-class experience and Saini bowled in second innings despite groin injury, Sundar kept picking wickets and kept it tight from one end as lone spinner. Magnificent day for India with the ball in hand. Theyhave picked 20 wickets in the game. See you tomorrow at 4 am IST. Expect a hard day of Test cricket from the two teams. Till then, take care and good-bye.

Here’s Mayank doing his best  wink

January 18, 2021, 12:37:35 (IST)

No good news this is

January 18, 2021, 12:35:42 (IST)

Terrific effort from Thakur. He is having a memorable Test match. His first Test ended for him after bowling just 10 balls. Here he is making most of it.

January 18, 2021, 12:34:44 (IST)
Indian spinners took 23 wickets in this Test series. The last time when they took more than 23 wickets in a Test series played in SENA countries was in 2007/08 when they picked up 32 wickets in Australia.

Hazlewood completes five balls in the over before the rain begins to come down heavily. The umpires have removed the bails and the groundsmen at work, covering the pitch. It is very overcast at Gabba by the looks of it. WE WILL WAIT.

After 1 over, India 4/0 ( Rohit Sharma 4 , Shubman Gill 0)

Starc runs in. Rohit starts off with a back foot defence. It is drizzling lightly at the moment. Looks like the rain is around. Rohit using soft hands as the ball is not going far from him after being defended. Followed by some leaves as Starc take it across. Classic Rohit Sharma lazy elegance n display as he collects a boundry through covers.

FOUR! Half-volley from Starc and Rohit stretches forward to steer it for four through cover
January 18, 2021, 11:58:48 (IST)
Gill looks at the heavens as he walks to the middle along side Rohit. Crucial 25 overs or so remaining in the match today. Mitchell Starc, as usual, with the new ball.

Siraj gets a five-for! And guess what it is Thakur, who has taken the catch to get the fifer for his colleague Siraj. Thakur also had a chance to take the five-wicket haul but he has played his part in making sure his bowling partner got one. Australia bowled out for 294. An inexperienced Indian bowling attack has taken 20 wickets in this game. Bravo, Bharat Arun!

Hazlewood dismissed. India need 328 to win this Test. We will be back in about 10 minutes or less.

January 18, 2021, 11:49:00 (IST)
FOUR! Huge drive from Hazlewood beats the mid off for four runs off Siraj
January 18, 2021, 11:46:12 (IST)

After 75 overs,Australia 289/9 ( Pat Cummins 27 , Josh Hazlewood 5)

Thakur continues. Another wide for the height in the over. One warning for the over as well. Three off the over. Australia lead by 322 runs.

January 18, 2021, 11:40:54 (IST)

After 74 overs,Australia 286/9 ( Pat Cummins 26 , Josh Hazlewood 4)

Siraj looking for his fifth. Tries a slower. Cummins picks it and smashes it for a six. Siraj had the chance to dismiss Hazlewood at the non-striker’s end with a throw after fielding the Cummins defence off his bowling in follow through. He aimed but did not throw. Could have been close.

January 18, 2021, 11:37:38 (IST)
SIX! Slower ball from Siraj and Cummins swings hard at it, clears the long on region for a maximum
January 18, 2021, 11:36:27 (IST)

After 73 overs,Australia 278/9 ( Pat Cummins 18 , Josh Hazlewood 4)

Wicket for Thakur. Lyon looked disguted at himself after going out like that. The ball was in his arc and he hit it straight at the fielder. Hazlewood comes and starts his innings with a lovely cover drive. Lead by 311.

FOUR! Lovely cover drive from Hazlewood off Thakur for four runs. Top shot.
January 18, 2021, 11:32:15 (IST)
OUT! Mayank Agarwal takes a safe catch at extra cover to dismiss Lyon. Thakur gets the wicket. Australia lose ninth. Tim Paine has not moved from his seat in dressing room, no declaration yet. Lyon c Agarwal b Thakur 13(10)
January 18, 2021, 11:30:47 (IST)

After 72 overs,Australia 274/8 ( Pat Cummins 18 , Nathan Lyon 13)

Siraj continues. 300 up for Australia. None of Australia players in their Test whites at the moment which signals that declaration is still not very near. I think there is a time in minds of the two batsmen in the middle. They want to bat for a certain period and see how many can come in that time. Lead is 307.

January 18, 2021, 11:28:10 (IST)
SIX! Lyon swings and swings hard, to put this short ball from Siraj away for six over deep fine leg fielder.
January 18, 2021, 11:26:19 (IST)

After 71 overs,Australia 266/8 ( Pat Cummins 17 , Nathan Lyon 6)

Effort balls from Thakur and Siraj leading to wides and no balls. Australia lead by 299. Five off the over.

January 18, 2021, 11:21:17 (IST)

After 70 overs,Australia 261/8 ( Pat Cummins 14 , Nathan Lyon 5)

He was surprised by that sharp seaming in delivery by Siraj but Cummins would have also loved it because it came off the crack. A lot of short stuff aimed at Cummins.

January 18, 2021, 11:17:53 (IST)
FOUR! Wow, what happened there? Think the ball hit a massive crack, back of the length outside off and nipped back sharply to Cummins, took the inside edge and beat Pant behind the stumps for four runs.
January 18, 2021, 11:16:44 (IST)

After 69 overs,Australia 254/8 ( Pat Cummins 9 , Nathan Lyon 4)

Thakur continues. If this inexperienced bowling attack picks up all 20 wickets, Bharat Arun, India’s bowling coach should be very proud of himself and his troop. Looks like Aussies will be going after the 300 + lead. Currently the lead is 287.

January 18, 2021, 11:12:10 (IST)

After 68 overs,Australia 250/8 ( Pat Cummins 6 , Nathan Lyon 3)

Siraj has struck after tea. Four wickets for him. A good opportunity to pick up maiden five-for. Lyon comes to bat and gets off the mark with a lovely on drive. He has nailed this shot in this game. Rahane with another stunning save at gully. Edge off Cummins on last ball of the over falls short of Rohit at second slip.

January 18, 2021, 11:09:46 (IST)
FOUR! Lyon comes at crease and starts off the innings with a fluid on drive, what a shot, he has bossed it in this game.
January 18, 2021, 11:08:06 (IST)
OUT! Siraj strikes after tea and removes Starc. The left-arm pacer has not lasted long with the bat in hand, off cutter it seems from Siraj and Starc went  after it on the full but gave a catch to Saini at mid off. Starc c Navdeep Saini b Siraj 1(4)
January 18, 2021, 11:04:15 (IST)

After 67 overs,Australia 247/7 ( Pat Cummins 6 , Mitchell Starc 1)

Thakur completes the over. A lot of short stuff aimed at Cummins. One misdirected one hit for four runs. Cummins and Starc in the middle. The objective is to score as much as possible maybe in the next one hour.

January 18, 2021, 10:59:30 (IST)
We are back as play resumes post tea and rain-break. An over has been lost. 36.5 overs still to be bowled in the day. A long session coming up. Australia will resume innings from 243/7, Thakur will finish his over.
January 18, 2021, 10:55:11 (IST)
Alright, great news. The play to resume at 11 am IST. Five minutes away from LIVE action.
January 18, 2021, 10:51:00 (IST)
The covers are getting off and we see Lyon still padded up which is a sign that Australia have not declared.
January 18, 2021, 10:45:11 (IST)
The visuals are not great. It is still drizzling and covers are still on at the moment. Looks like more delay on the cards.
January 18, 2021, 10:37:14 (IST)
Looks like the rain is here to stay. We still have not seen the start of third session’s play. Stay tuned for more updates.

Tea, Day 4  (AUS 243/7)

Some drizzling has forced the umpires to call early tea on Day 4 of the Brisbane Test. Siraj, Shardul sharing the spoils with three wickets each. The Aussies, meanwhile, would look to score quickly and take a sizeable lead to have sufficient time to dismiss the Indian batsmen. They lead worth 276 before tea.

January 18, 2021, 10:08:03 (IST)

After 66 overs,Australia 242/7 ( Pat Cummins 2 , Mitchell Starc 0)

Natarajan returns to the attack. Australia’s tail has come into play now. How long can they last? Expect them to go for the big ones as Australia look to put a competitive target for India. But wait, Cummins still playing the waiting game as the left arm seamer bowls a maiden over.

January 18, 2021, 09:59:46 (IST)

After 65 overs,Australia 242/7 ( Pat Cummins 2 , Mitchell Starc 0)

Thakur continues. Paine, the last of the recognised batsman, departs after edging the ball to Pant and the wicketkeeper made no mistake. Right, will be interesting to see Australia’s approach from here. Three runs and a wicket in that over.

January 18, 2021, 09:57:53 (IST)
OUT! Skipper Paine departs. Shardul dug that one real short and Pant had to time his jump to perfection if he was to complete the catch**. Paine c Pant b Thakur 27(37)**

Day 3 report: A pair of unlikely third-day batting heroes Sunday gave India a fighting chance of securing the draw they need in the fourth Test against Australia to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, in just his second Test, put on 123 runs for the seventh wicket – a record for India at the Gabba – taking their team from a precarious 186 for seven to 309 before Thakur was bowled by Pat Cummins for an entertaining 67. All-rounder Sundar, on debut, batted well with the tail until he guided a Mitchell Starc short ball to Cameron Green in the gully to fall for 62. By the time Mohammad Siraj was bowled by Josh Hazlewood, giving him figures of 5-57, India had reached 336, only 33 runs behind Australia’s first innings total of 369. Australian openers Marcus Harris and David Warner survived six testing overs as Australia finished the third day on 21 without loss, a lead of 54 runs with all 10 second innings wickets intact. Without Sundar and Thakur, India would have been in far greater trouble against an Australia side who must win the match to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with the four-match series locked at 1-1. The two smashed the previous seventh-wicket record for India at the Gabba of 58, set by Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar in 1991. Thakur said he used some words coach Ravi Shastri said to him before he played a match in the ODI series as inspiration. “He said if you perform in this one today you will be rewarded and people will love you for your performance – that one thing was on my mind,” he said. “That was my biggest positive and keeping those things in my mind, I just kept playing.” [caption id=“attachment_9210361” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] India’s Washington Sundar (R) is congratulated by Shardul Thakur (L) after reaching his half century during day three of the fourth cricket Test match between Australia and India at the Gabba in Brisbane on January 17, 2021. (Photo by Patrick HAMILTON / AFP) / – IMAGE RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE - STRICTLY NO COMMERCIAL USE – Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur stitched a 123-run stand to keep India alive in the fourth Test against Australia. AFP[/caption] Thakur said he and Sundar worked well with each other to make sure they kept their concentration. “If someone was losing focus or playing a loose shot we would immediately come together and say let’s get back to normal and play the basics,” he said. By contrast, India’s top-order batsmen all squandered chances to score heavily, with all but Shubman Gill getting starts but all except Cheteshwar Pujara falling to rash shots. Defiant stand The visitors began the extended morning session on 62 for two, with Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. Both men looked to keep the scoreboard ticking over, in contrast to Saturday afternoon, where they were more intent on survival. They saw off Starc and Cummins but Hazlewood was introduced into the attack and produced a brilliant over which led to Pujara’s downfall. Hazlewood had Pujara in trouble when a short ball followed him as he tried to evade it, the ball hitting his glove and falling just short of Cameron Green in the gully. But two deliveries later Hazlewood got a ball to angle in, then straighten slightly to catch the outside edge of Pujara’s bat and Australia’s captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine took a routine catch. Rahane and Mayank Agarwal steadied the ship but with the lunch break in sight, Rahane couldn’t resist playing at a wide ball from left-arm paceman Starc angling across his body and edged a comfortable catch to Matthew Wade at fourth slip. The Indian captain, on 37, threw his head back in disgust at the manner of his dismissal before trudging off. The Indians began the second session at 161 for four with the dangerous Agarwal and Rishabh Pant at the crease. However, like Rahane, both Agarwal and Pant fell to injudicious shots. Agarwal slashed at a wide delivery from Cummins’ second ball after the resumption to fall for 38, caught at second slip by Steve Smith. Then to compound India’s problems, Pant did the same to Hazlewood, only to be caught in the gully by Green for 23. At that stage Australia were in command of the Test but Sundar, playing his first Test, and Thakur, in his second, had other ideas and defied the bowling attack with a mixture of solid defence and attractive stroke making. Hazlewood conceded Australia could have done better during their partnership. “We probably didn’t execute as well as we could have during that period,” he said. “We created a few half chances and on any other day we take those. “But credit to those two guys, they batted beautifully.” With inputs from AFP
