Gayle, who was not retained by Bangalore, could still return to the franchise with the new ‘right to match’ rule, which states that teams can retain players by equalling the final bid. Du Plessis, who is leading South Africa in the third Test against India, said players had been told not to discuss the auction during play. “The IPL plays a big part in all of our lives. Mumbai Indians’ Akash Ambani said they were happy with the way the auction went today.
“We got the two players we wanted through the Right to Match cards — Keiron Pollard and Krunal Pandya. We also have two overseas fast bowlers in Pat Cummins and Mustafizur. That’s been our strategy right through. Build the attack around two overseas pacers. We are waiting for the emerging cricketers and others to come through on the morrow and have the purse to make good buys on Sunday. We are looking forward to tomorrow.”
He also said that Mumbai Indians were against the IPL matches starting early, at 7 p.m. “People of Mumbai work till 7 p.m. to 7.30. So its not fair to start before 8 p.m. It impacts so many things, socially and economically. So we are not for it.”
Rickey Ponting said that all the franchises seemed to be going for young players. “We want to build a team not just for this season, but also for the future. We are happy at getting some young cricketers. And they will be will the teams for a while. That’s the reason sometimes uncapped players get a little more than capped players in this auction. "
On the day 49 Indians and 29 overseas players were sold. A total of Rs 318.10 crore was spent. It may be recalled that Rs 197 out of the total Rs 640 crores went towards retaining players before the start of the auction.
