Pakistan will be hoping to begin their quest for a third Asia Cup title – their first in the T20 format – on a strong note when they face Oman in their opening match of the continental tournament less than 24 hours from now. Like the Men in Green, Oman will also be making their first appearance in the tournament that has witnessed India inflict an almighty thrashing on hosts UAE and Afghanistan as well as Bangladesh also registering big wins.
Pakistan’s lack of success when it comes to the Asia Cup – which has been in existence since 1984 – continues to baffle many a follower of the game, especially since they were among the top teams in the world in the 1980s and 1990s and were the standout Asian team for an extended period of time.
The Men in Green, however, have lifted the Asia Cup just twice – in 2000 and 2012 under the leadership of Moin Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq respectively. As for the T20 version of the event, they had finished runners-up in the previous edition three years ago, which also took place in the UAE, losing to Sri Lanka in the final by 23 runs.
Pakistan will be eyeing maiden Asian T20 title
Despite India’s status as strong favourites to lift the title, given their status as world champions in the format as well as their all-round domination of UAE on Wednesday, Pakistan will back themselves to go the distance in the tournament that concludes on 28 September. Especially since the team has responded positively under all-rounder Salman Ali Agha’s leadership in recent months.
Oman, meanwhile, have qualified for the Asia Cup for the first time this year after making three appearances in the T20 World Cup – exiting in the group stage on each occasion, including in the US and the Caribbean last year.
