As India gear up for the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025, skipper Rohit Sharma has addressed concerns over the team’s selection, particularly the inclusion of five spin-bowling options. Responding to critics, Rohit clarified that India’s approach is based on playing to their strengths.
Rohit backs selectors’ decision to pick five spinners
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma emphasised the versatility of his squad, stating, “We have two spinners and three all-rounders. I am not looking at them as five spinners. Jadeja, Axar, and Washi (Washington Sundar) give us a lot of depth.” He reiterated that the combination provides flexibility in both batting and bowling, making the team more balanced.
“Many other teams carry six pacers when they have pace-bowling all-rounders. No one says they have one pacer too many. That’s their strength, and we focus on our strengths.” Rohit said.
Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are the two specialists spinners while the other options in that department are Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who all are very capable batters.
The spin-heavy side has three fast-bowling options in the form of Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana with Hardik Pandya being the sole pace all-rounder.
Rohit also acknowledged the significance of the upcoming tournament, as the Champions Trophy returns after an eight-year hiatus. “Every ICC event is important. We have to do a lot of things right to hold the trophy,” he said.
Rohit also spoke about Shubman Gill, saying “Shubman Gill is a Class player. His numbers are crazy and there is a reason why He has been moved as the Vice Captain of the team.”
