The upcoming series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which has been in India’s possession since their 2-1 triumph at home in 2017, will also be a crucial assignment for both teams as far as the race to next year’s ICC World Test Championship final is concerned.
Reigning world Test champions Australia currently find themselves at the top of the table while India find themselves needing to beat the Pat Cummins-led hosts by a 4-0 margin or better in order to secure direct qualification for a third consecutive appearance in a WTC final.

What will the weather in Perth be like for the duration of the first Test?
Weather could play a role in the series opener at the Optus Stadium, which will reportedly have a “spicy” pitch with plenty of pace and bounce, with some rain expected on the eve of the opening day. According to Accuweather, Thursday is expected to remain cloudy with a 20 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon and a 58 per cent chance of rain at around 11 pm local time — which could result in damp playing conditions on the opening day that could influence the toss.
As for the opening day itself, there is a 25 per cent chance of rain, with showers taking place mainly in the morning which could result in Australian captain Pat Cummins or Jasprit Bumrah, who is filling in for Rohit Sharma for the first time, opting to bowl.
The rest of the match, however, is expected to have little to no disturbance due to rain and should witness the full quota of 90 overs being bowled each day, depending on the over-rates of course.
