Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma it seems are set to get even longer rope despite a horror show from the veteran batters in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 that India lost 3-1 in Australia. Not only Kohli, it has been reported that coach Gautam Gambhir is also not going to face any action shortly as the Indian cricket team shifts its focus from red-ball cricket to while-ball matches.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to review the Indian cricket team’s unforgettable performance in the five-match Test series against Australia where they lost despite taking a 1-0 lead after winning the Perth Test match. Both Rohit and Kohli had a poor time with the bat in Australia. Kohli scored a century in the Perth Test but finished with just 190 runs from nine innings. The 36-year-old was dismissed eight times on the tour and all eight times he was caught behind the wicket either by the wicket-keeper or the slip fielders.
BCCI not expected to punish Kohli and Rohit
Rohit had an even worse outing, scoring just 31 runs in five innings as he was forced to sit out of the Sydney Test. He, however, later clarified that it was his decision to step down for just one match and the 37-year-old is in no mood to retire.

The 43-year-old coach Gambhir faced criticism for picking all-rounders over specialists who could have helped the team make more impact in their respective departments. The dip in returns from the batters and the lack of fighting knocks from Indian players were also questioned.
However, a BCCI source has told news agency IANS that Kohli and Rohit are likely to be retained for the England Test series in June, while Gambhir will also continue as coach for the 2025 Champions Trophy and the England tour.
“Yes, there will be a review meeting but no firing. C’mon, you can’t sack a coach for the batters’ poor show in one series. Gautam Gambhir will remain the coach, and Virat and Rohit will feature in the England series. The focus is Champions Trophy," a BCCI source told IANS.

If Kohli and Rohit are selected for the England Test series in June, it will be intriguing to hear the selectors explain their decision, considering India have no Test matches scheduled until then and the senior players have not participated in the Ranji Trophy for several years.
