Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis on Thursday announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals with immediate effect. This comes just days before the commencement of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 . Stoinis had been named in Australia’s preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy but now he will be replaced in the team expected to be announced on 12 February.
‘I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan’
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said in his statement.
“Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career,” he added.
“I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Australia men’s team coach Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” he concluded.
Stoinis suffered an injury while playing for Durban’s Super Giants in the ongoing SA20 competition in South Africa. The 35-year-old then decided to step down from ODIs to focus the remaining time of his career on T20 cricket.
Another all-rounder, Mitchell Marsh, has already been ruled out of Australia’s Champions Trophy squad due to a back injury. Aussie captain Pat Cummins is highly likely to be ruled out , with Steve Smith expected to take up the captaincy for the marquee event. Josh Hazlewood also remains under the cloud due to injury concerns.
Now Australia will be required to replace at least four players from the 15-member Champions Trophy squad. The ICC’s deadline to make final changes is 12 February.
