India vs South Africa 2nd Test Live: Here's what Tristan Stubbs said after stumps

“A bit disappointing in the end. The top six got in but no one made a big one. I prefer batting at No. 3. The pitch played quite nicely. They bowled well, it was hard to score. You felt comfortable but the scoreboard wasn’t going anyway, so it was not free-flowing. [His wicket] Every time Kuldeep has bowled slower in his first ball. He beat me with the drift, can’t believe he got me out. And KL caught it! First innings runs are going to be important. Sen and Verreynne need to bat as long as possible. Just extend the first innings as much as we can.”

For the first time in the 148-year history of Test cricket, the tea break is taking place before the lunch interval. This is due to the sun setting in Guwahati around 4.30 pm IST in November. Despite being such a large country by area, India continues to follow a single time zone, due to which the sun sets much earlier in the north-eastern part of the country compared to western states such as Gujarat and Maharastra. India vs South Africa 2nd Test Live: Indian bowlers struggling to get a breakthrough despite being disciplined for the better part of the day

Bumrah has been the pick of the bowlers so far, conceding just 17 runs in 12 overs and castling Aiden Markram along the way while left-arm spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have bowled steady spells without bowling too many loose deliveries.

Barring a few LBW shouts, the Indians haven’t been able to create too many chances in the second. The closest they had come to breaking the partnership was the inside edge onto the pad that Bumrah had induced off Bavuma’s blade that nearly rattled the stumps.

India vs South Africa 2nd Test Live: LUNCH ON DAY 1 – South Africa 156/2 after 55 overs; Temba Bavuma 36\* (86), Tristan Stubbs 32\* (82)

The Proteas lose just one wicket in the second session, which was the case in the morning as well. Only this time the third-wicket partnership between captain Bavuma and Stubbs that’s currently worth 74 is still going strong. India were off to a top start after tea by getting rid of Ryan Rickelton just two balls into the session but Bavuma and Stubbs have steadied the ship since then, thwarting whatever the Indian bowlers have been firing at them. Both sessions have gone the Proteas’ way so far today.

Washington Sundar returns for a solitary over before lunch, conceding three singles. Siraj then engages in some theatrics with Stubbs in the final over, mimicking a throw a couple of times as a warning.

India vs South Africa 2nd Test Live: Drinks brought to the field at the end of the 42nd over, with South Africa in a relatively comfortable position of 129/2

The Proteas were staring at the possibility of a batting collapse after losing openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton in a space of four deliveries on either side of the tea break.

Tristan Stubbs and captain Temba Bavuma, however, do an excellent job steadying the the South African ship in their second innings, their partnership currently worth 47. The two have batted steadily without going into a shell, collecting the occasional four or six that’s on offer.

India vs South Africa LIVE Cricket Score, 2nd Test Day 1: India are all set to play South Africa in the last Test of the two-match series at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. This match is very important for India because they lost the first Test in Kolkata by 30 runs. If India don’t win this game, they will lose the series and South Africa will get their first series win in India after 25 years.

The Proteas have already registered a record after their win in the opening Test as it was their first red-ball victory on Indian soil in 15 years. The world champions will look to carry their momentum into the second game in Guwahati, which is hosting a Test match for the first time.

Rishabh Pant to lead India

Shubman Gill has been ruled out because of a neck injury, so his deputy Rishabh Pant will be the captain for the match. Nitish Kumar Reddy or Sai Sudharsan are expected to replace Gill in the Indian playing XI. On the South African side, Kagiso Rabada is injured and will miss the game.

How will the pitch behave?

All eyes will be on the pitch, which has created a lot of intrigue, especially given what happened in the first game. The opening Test in Kolkata ended in just three days, raising a lot of questions around India’s obsession with playing on a turning track. Gautam Gambhir had defended the pitch last time around, blaming his batters for failing to apply themselves.

Meanwhile, there are reports that a red-soil surface will be used in Guwahati, which is expected to favour both fast-bowling and spin. But it is hard to say for sure, because pitches often behave in unexpected ways, as proved in Eden Gardens last week.

India vs South Africa: Full squads

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Rishabh Pant (c, wk), Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Devdutt Padikkal, Akash Deep
