India vs South Africa Highlights, 2nd Test Day 1: Siraj's late blow leaves SA on 247/6 at stumps

As expected, bad light has forced early stumps on the opening day of this Test match in Guwahati. It is the northeast of India and the sun sets quite early there. It is quite dark in Guwahati and the umpires decide that they have seen enough, or rather they cannot see enough.

The very first delivery with the second new ball for Mohammed Siraj and he finds the wicket. Length ball which nips just a touch away from Tony de Zorzi who is forward in his defence and the ball takes away an edge with Rishabh Pant completing a diving catch behind the wicket. de Zorzi goes for 28(59).

Senuran Muthusamy gets a boundary on the very first ball with the second new ball as Jasprit Bumrah strays towards his pads. The Indian pacer quickly bounces back and gets his line and length right on the next three balls to finish off the over without further damage.

What a shot! Tony de Zorzi rocks back and slams this short ball from Kuldeep Yadav over the mid wicket fence for a maximum. Totally against the run of play.

And he adds another boundary to his account on the last ball of the over. Big over for South Africa and they will put India under pressure with this counter attack.

Kuldeep strikes again! Ordinary shot from Wiaan Mulder who tries to take on Kuldeep but ends up handing the simplest of catches to the mid-off fielder. Really poor shot selection but India would not mind. Kuldeep gets his third wicket and India are on top now.

Ravindra Jadeja gets the big fish. Temba Bavuma perishes for 41(92) trying to go over the mid on fielder. Full and flighted from Jadeja, inviting Bavuma to go over the fielder and the South Africa captain accepts the invitation but does not get the timing right. Good catch for Yashasvi Jaiswal and India break the 84-run partnership.

Travis Head completes a 36-ball fifty after filling in as opener in place of Usman Khawaja, sharing a 75-run opening stand with Jake Weatherald before the latter is dismissed by Brydon Carse. Australia had earlier bowled England out for 164, and are staring at the possibility of collecting a victory inside two days thanks to Head’s whirlwind start.

Bumrah has been the pick of the bowlers so far, conceding just 17 runs in 12 overs and castling Aiden Markram along the way while left-arm spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have bowled steady spells without bowling too many loose deliveries.

Barring a few LBW shouts, the Indians haven’t been able to create too many chances in the second. The closest they had come to breaking the partnership was the inside edge onto the pad that Bumrah had induced off Bavuma’s blade that nearly rattled the stumps.

The Proteas lose just one wicket in the second session, which was the case in the morning as well. Only this time the third-wicket partnership between captain Bavuma and Stubbs that’s currently worth 74 is still going strong. India were off to a top start after tea by getting rid of Ryan Rickelton just two balls into the session but Bavuma and Stubbs have steadied the ship since then, thwarting whatever the Indian bowlers have been firing at them. Both sessions have gone the Proteas’ way so far today.

Washington Sundar returns for a solitary over before lunch, conceding three singles. Siraj then engages in some theatrics with Stubbs in the final over, mimicking a throw a couple of times as a warning.

Bavuma, who has hardly been in danger so far today, misses the ball completely while attempting a sweep off the left-arm spinner, and is struck on his abdomen in front of leg. Umpire Rod Tucker shakes his head initially, and his judgement turns out to be correct as the ball is shown to be missing leg during the review.

The over also witnesses Kuldeep hit the non-striker’s stumps from the deep square leg fence, although non-striker Stubbs had comfortably made it past the crease on time. SA 134/2 after 45

The Proteas were staring at the possibility of a batting collapse after losing openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton in a space of four deliveries on either side of the tea break.

Tristan Stubbs and captain Temba Bavuma, however, do an excellent job steadying the the South African ship in their second innings, their partnership currently worth 47. The two have batted steadily without going into a shell, collecting the occasional four or six that’s on offer.
