India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will not play the upcoming 50-over series against South Africa and New Zealand. A report suggests that he is still recovering from the serious blow he suffered in Australia last month during the ODI series, which led to his hospitalisation and a minor procedure to stop internal bleeding.

Shreyas got injured while taking a catch in the third ODI against Australia. At first, the injury looked minor, but his condition suddenly became serious. He had internal bleeding and had to be admitted to the ICU. Later, the BCCI confirmed that he had suffered a ruptured spleen, and he underwent surgery in Australia.

Shreyas Iyer remains under medical supervision

According to the report in Dainik Jagran, Shreyas has returned to India and is following a strict rehabilitation plan at home under medical supervision. He recently underwent an ultrasonography test in Mumbai. His scan reports were checked by India’s top sports injury specialist, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, who also treated Rishabh Pant after his horrific car accident.

The good news is that the reports show some improvement. However, Shreyas has been advised not to do anything that puts pressure on his abdomen for at least one month. He can only perform very light exercises and simple daily activities. After around two months, he will undergo another USG test. Only after that scan will doctors decide if he can start rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

This means Shreyas’ participation in the IPL 2026 season could also be delayed, and he may miss the first few matches. It also ends any remaining possibility of him being considered for India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India in February-March.
