India batter Shreyas Iyer had been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after his condition improved. Still, the 30-year-old would remain in the hospital under the supervision of the doctors for a few more days.
Iyer suffered a ribcage injury while taking a diving catch in the third India-Australia ODI at Sydney on Saturday. He was taken to the hospital after his vital parameters were significantly low. Iyer was then admitted to the ICU on the same day due to internal bleeding as he suffered a laceration injury to the spleen. A BCCI source told news agency PTI that the injury could have been “fatal” if the cricketer had not received timely treatment.
Iyer out of ICU, condition stable
Iyer was moved out of the ICU on Monday after his condition improved. “He has been shifted out of ICU and may take a few more days before he is discharged from hospital in Sydney,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Providing more details on Iyer’s injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday said that the board is in touch with the doctors in Sydney and an Indian team doctor has stayed back in the city to monitor the batter’s progress
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the BCCI media release said.
A few of Iyer’s friends, who live in Australia, are also by his side, while his parents have applied for urgent Australia visas to visit their son.

“When I got to know about his injury, I called our physio Kamlesh Jain to get the update. Iyer has been replying on the phone now which means he is stable,” SKY told the media on Tuesday.
