US President Donald Trump has once again indicated that he ‘would love to’ run for the presidency for a third time in 2028, a move that is constitutionally impermissible in the country.
However, Trump dismissed the idea of running for vice president in 2028, a suggestion made by some supporters as a potential way to bypass the US Constitution’s ban on presidents serving a third term.
Talking to reporters on his way to Japan from Malaysia, Trump noted that while he would be “allowed” to run for vice president, he has no plans to do so in 2028. “I think people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right,” he said.
When asked about US Vice President JD Vance and State Secretary Marco Rubio as being potential Republican successors, Trump said, “All I can tell you is that we have a great group of people, which they don’t,” referring to Democrats.
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits presidents from serving more than two terms.
Overturning the amendment would require approval from two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or the convening of a constitutional convention by two-thirds of state legislatures, a scenario considered highly improbable.
To take effect, the amendment’s repeal would also need ratification from 38 states.
Last week, former Trump adviser and outspoken supporter Steve Bannon claimed there was a “plan” in place to secure a third term for Trump.
Talking to The Economist, Bannon said, “Trump is going to be president in ‘28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that. At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is.”
