While there is a buzz that a high-profile former Indian cricketer may become the next Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, it certainly won’t be Sachin Tendulkar. This was confirmed by the legendary batter’s management firm on Thursday as they labelled the rumours regarding Tendulkar and BCCI presidency as “unfounded”.
Former India all-rounder Roger Binny has stepped down as BCCI president after turning 70 in July and becoming ineligible for the post as per the Justice Lodha Committee recommendations. The new BCCI president will be elected in the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held in the last week of September.
Tendulkar won’t become next BCCI head
A few media houses speculated that Tendulkar could be the next BCCI head. While a former cricketer may still take the top spot, the 52-year-old’s management firm issued a statement denying it can be the former India captain.
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” read a statement from Tendulkar’s company.
“We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations,” it added.
The BCCI AGM will be taking place on 28 September. Till then vice-president Rajeev Shukla will be the caretaker chief of the world’s richest cricket board.
The next BCCI president, however, would be allowed to continue beyond the age of 70 as the National Sports Bill 2025 allows for such an arrangement. But as the bill is not yet notified, Binny could not continue as the BCCI head.
