Contrary to reports, Rajeev Shukla may not get the post of the BCCI president at the AGM. It can go to a high-profile former Indian cricketer, in accordance to the recent trend at the Indian cricket board.

Before the Asia Cup 2025 begins, the politics at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to heat up as the board prepares to elect its new president. Roger Binny, who turned 70 in July, has reportedly stepped down as the BCCI president, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla filling in for the former all-rounder in the meantime.

A new BCCI president is set to be picked during the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held in the last week of September. Besides electing a new BCCI president, the elections for the post of secretary, vice-president, joint secretary, treasurer and IPL chairman will also take place at the AGM.

High-profile Indian cricketer to become next BCCI president?

The latest twist, however, is that a legendary former Indian cricketer has joined the race to become the next big president. While many media houses have reported that Rajeev Shukla will be picked as the next BCCI president at the AGM, a report in Dainik Jagran claims that a high-profile former Indian cricketer, who has “broken” many records, is “set” to be made the next BCCI president.

According to reports, talks were held with this former cricketer in England during India’s tour. However, there’s no clarity whether he has accepted the role. In case he has, it would be easier for him to become the president as the BCCI has aggressively promoted former Indian players as its head in recent years.

Before Binny, legendary captain Sourav Ganguly was the BCCI’s president. Also, under the BJP government in the centre, priority is given to former players to head the sporting federations. Former athletics star PT Usha currently heads the Indian Olympic Association.

The Dainik Jagran report added that most of the important positions in the BCCI this time will be filled by mutual consent and elections may not take place. Devjit Saikia is likely to continue as BCCI secretary. BCCI joint secretary Rohan Goons Desai and treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia would most probably continue in their positions.

BCCI could get new vice-president from Bihar

This also means Rajeev Shukla could continue as in the BCCI as IPL chairman, while Bihar Cricket Association president and BJP leader Rakesh Tiwari could become the BCCI vice-president.

Considering the National Sports Administration Act has yet not come into force, the BCCI AGM this month will follow the Justice Lodha Committee recommendations, as per which, Binny cannot be reelected as BCCI president as he has crossed the age limit of 70.
