Former India cricketer Roger Binny, who turned 70 last month, has reportedly stepped down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, while Rajeev Shukla has taken over as the acting head of the world’s richest cricket board, till the next election.

The news agency PTI has recently stated that Binny may continue as BCCI president despite becoming eligible due to his age . As per the Supreme Court-mandated Lodha Committee recommendations, the BCCI president cannot be more than 70. However, the latest National Sports Governance Bill 2025 has raised the age cap to 75 for all National State Federations. It has to be noted that the BCCI has now been placed under the Sports Bill by the Indian government.

The report further added that Binny will not only be able to continue as BCCI president till the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September with support from the Sports Bill, but can also seek re-election. But Dainik Jagran has now reported that Binny has stepped down, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla replacing him temporarily.

One of the reasons Shukla had to take over is that the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 has not been notified yet, and it could take at least three-four months more for the law to be enacted. In such a case, BCCI cannot make a presidential decision as per the new bill.

Meanwhile, Shukla headed the BCCI’s Apex Council meeting that took place on Wednesday. One of the agendas of the meeting was the termination of the sponsorship deal with Dream11 and to find a new sponsor for the Indian cricket team before the Asia Cup 2025 starts on 9 September.

“We don’t even have two weeks left. We are trying, but floating a new tender, completing legal processes, and handling technicalities will take time. As for a short-term sponsor only for the Asia Cup, we are not going that way. Our focus is on securing a sponsor for the next two-and-a-half years, until the 2027 ODI World Cup in October-November,” a BCCI source told Dainik Jagran.
