Rishabh Pant was batting wonderfully in the company of KL Rahul when the former was run-out by England captain Ben Stokes at the stroke of lunch on Day 3 of the third Test at Lord's. The wicketkeeper-batter was on 74 and the fourth-wicket partnership with Rahul was worth nearly 150 when he set off for a risky single off Shoaib Bashir’s bowling in the final over of the morning session.
Stokes, who had endured a frustrating morning on Saturday with little going England’s way, gathered he ball at cover point and hurdled it towards the non-striker’s stumps with pinpoint accuracy. The English celebrations had already begun on the field even as umpire Sharfuddoula decided to consult the third umpire before confirming Pant’s dismissal.

Supporters of the Indian cricket team, as well as several former cricketers and pundits, weren’t too happy with Pant’s call for a risky single that ultimately brought his entertaining knock to an end and gave England an opening.
Former India Test No 3 Cheteshwar Pujara was among those who felt the single was needless on Pant’s part.
“It was not needed. I don’t know whether it was Rishabh or KL who wanted that run. Things were going so smoothly. Rishabh will be disappointed with that,” Pujara, who performed the customary ringing of the ball at the ‘Home of Cricket’ said during commentary.

View AllIrfan Pathan, who is also part of Sony Sports Network’s panel of experts for the ongoing series along with Pujara, felt, Pant deserved a century at Lord’s the way he had batted so far today.
“What a way to get out after batting so so well. Rishabh pant’s this innings deserved 100 n more,” the former all-rounder wrote on X.
Gavaskar’s ‘stupid!’ remark goes viral once again after Pant’s run-out at Lord’s
Here are some more reactions on social media, with many making reference to batting great Sunil Gavaskar’s “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!” remark after he threw his wicket away during the ‘Boxing Day Test’ against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in December.

However, it must be noted that Pant managed to add 55 runs to his overnight score of 19 despite nursing an injury on his bottom hand, where he was struck on the index finger while keeping wickets in the evening session of the opening day at Lord’s.
