India continued to produce a centurion in every match so far in the ongoing series against England with senior opener KL Rahul bringing up the milestone on Day 3 of the third Test at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground . Rahul was batting on 98 at lunch on the ‘Moving Day’ after wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, with whom he added 141 for the fourth wicket, was run out in the final over of the morning session .
The 33-year-old would then bring up the milestone for the second time in the ongoing series and for the 10th time overall in his career shortly after play resumed with a single off Jofra Archer. And in the process, he became the first Indian batter to get a second mention on the Lord’s Honours Board in nearly three decades!
Rahul emulates legendary Vengsarkar’s feat, joins elite list
Former captain Dilip Vengsarkar was the last Indian batter to score multiple centuries at the ‘Home of Cricket’, having scored his second century at Lord’s in 1982. He would add a third ton here four years later, this time in a winning cause as India registered its maiden Test win at Lord’s.
Rahul’s previous century at Lord’s had also resulted in a victory, with his 250-ball 129 playing an important role in a 151-run victory in 2021.
The 33-year-old also became the first Asian opener to score multiple hundreds at Lord’s, as well as the fourth visiting opener after Bill Brown (Australia), Gordon Greenidge (West Indies) and Graeme Smith (South Africa) – each of whom have two centuries to their name.
His century at Lord’s is also his fourth on England soil, having scored a superb 149 at The Oval in 2018 as well as 137 at Headingley in the ongoing series in addition to his two centuries at Lord’s.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsThat Rahul is something of an overseas specialist is further solidified by the fact that nine of his 10 Test hundreds have come outside India – seven of them in SENA nations.
With his latest knock, Rahul has also scored more than one century in a series for the first time in his career.
He could have made it even more special by converting it into an even bigger score and steering India towards a first innings lead. Unfortunately for him and the visitors, Rahul was dismissed right after reaching the milestone, getting caught at slip off Shoaib Bashir’s bowling following a lapse of concentration.
