Jasprit Bumrah looked visibly frustrated towards the end of Day 2 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley. Despite being India’s best bowler in the first innings, Bumrah didn’t get the kind of support he needed from other bowlers and the fielders. As a result, England ended their innings strongly with 465 runs on Day 3, falling short of just 6 runs from India’s total of 471.

However, one moment caught everyone’s attention and it came during the 40th over of England’s innings yesterday. Bumrah was not on the field at the time, and Shardul Thakur was brought into the attack for the first time in the match. When the cameras shifted to the Indian dressing room, Bumrah was seen having an intense discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir.

The Indian pace spearhead bowled with great intensity in the first innings, finishing with a five-wicket haul on Day 3. However, dropped catches made his job harder. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped three catches off Bumrah’s bowling , while Ravindra Jadeja dropped one. This is the most dropped catches off an Indian bowler in a Test innings.

England responded with a strong total thanks to contributions from middle-order, especially from Ollie Pope (106) and Harry Brook (99), both of whom benefited from India’s poor catching. Bumrah cleaned up the tail efficiently, but by then the damage had already been done.

In response, India were 90 for 2 at stumps on Day 3, with KL Rahul steady on 47 and Shubman Gill batting on 6. India will hope to build a healthy lead on Day 4. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan are the two wickets that India have lost in their second innings. They still have some solid batting to come after Rahul and Gill.
