India vs South Africa Highlights 2nd ODI at Raipur: Proteas chase down 359 in Raipur to level ODI series 1-1

Australia had also chased down 359 against the Men in Blue, in Mohali in 2019. India’s successful chase of the 360-run target set by Australia in Jaipur in the iconic 2013 series remains top of the list.

The Indian bowlers, especially spinner Kuldeep Yadav, are having a tough time maintaining a grip on the ball, and convince the umpires to get it changed in the 43rd over – in which the left-arm wrist spinner bowls out his final over of the evening. The 300 also comes up for the Proteas in this over, with a well-set Matthew Breetzke at the centre giving the away dressing room the assurance that they will be heading to Vizag with the series still alive.

Harshit Rana’s pace variations work and he gets rid of Aiden Markram. Short slow off-cutter banged in the middle of the pitch by Rana and Markram miscues his shot to Ruturaj Gaikwad at the long-on fence. Huge wicket for India as they see the back of Markram who scores 110 from 98.

This could be the turning point in this match.

SA 196-3(30) need 162 in 120 balls

Ravindra Jadeja misjudges the pace of the ball at the deep mid-wicket boundary and ends up misfielding to give away a boundary to Aiden Markram. The South African opener is playing a gem of an innings here. India have to find a way to take a wicket here.

Aiden Markram gets to his century. Lovely batting from the South Africa opener and he has just played superbly in the ‘V’ down the ground. Nine fours and four sixes by Markram as he brings up his ton in 88 balls.

Aiden Markram jumps down his crease and launches Washington Sundar for a six over long-on. It went high in the sky and also got the distance very comfortably. Markram is troubling India here. KL Rahul would want his wicket quickly.

Nicely played from Matthew Breetzke. Half colley from Prasidh Krishna and Breetzke just shows the full face of his bat to push the ball past the non-striker and it goes past the boundary as well. Elegance filled in that shot.

And now we are at the half-way mark in this chase. South Africa still need 206 more runs to win this game in 25 overs. They do have the hitting power in the lower order to chase it down. India would need wickets.

Three overs and 29 runs given so far from Prasidh Krishna. He did get the wicket of Temba Bavuma but South Africa have managed to find boundaries against him with ease. The dew is also playing its part and it will only make things tougher for Indian bowlers.

Another short ball but this time it’s a wicket. Prasidh Krishna bangs it short again but this time the line is a little outside the off-stump and Bavuma tries to drag it to the leg side but only mistimes his pull shot to Harshit Rana on square leg. 101-run partnership for the second wicket is now over. Bavuma is out for 46 off 48.

Good use of pace from Temba Bavuma. Prasidh Krishna bangs it short and Bavuma just gets underneath the line of the ball and hooks it over the fine leg fielder for a maximum.

SA 127-1(20.4)

Exceptional effort from Tilak Varma, the substitute fielder, to stop a six. The third umpire had a long look at that but in the end he concludes that Varma has managed to throw the ball inside before the ball’s momentum pushed him outside the boundary line. Brilliant effort and five runs saved for India.

SA 118-1(20) need 241 runs

What just happened there? That is a six! Kuldeep Yadav bowls it short and Aiden Markram pulls it towards long-on. It is a mistimed shot and should have gone straight into the hands of Yashasvi Jaiswal but he just parries the ball over the fence for a single. Really sloppy from the opener. Kuldeep is frustrated with that effort. Poor from Jaiswal.

Brilliant ball from Ravindra Jadeja and he beats Temba Bavuma’s outside edge. The ball goes into KL Rahul’s gloves and he is quick to dislodge the bail. The square-leg umpire wants to check the replay but the third umpire finds Bavuma’s foot is easily inside the line.

Kuldeep Yadav comes into the attack and right away Aiden Markram puts pressure on him. Short ball and Markram powers the ball past the bowler for a four down the ground.

SA 87-1 (15.1)

Beautiful from Temba Bavuma. A fuller delivery from Washington Sundar and also offering decent width. Temba Bavuma just leans towards the ball and sends it to the extra cover boundary with a lovely cover drive.

10 runs from this over and South Africa are doing things well here.

Another beautiful shot from Aiden Markram. This one is little full from Washington Sundar and Markram presents a full face of his bat to send it down the ground for a boundary.

A good starting over from Washington Sundar. Just gives away two runs to end the powerplay. Temba Bavuma is playing an anchor role here it seems. Aiden Markram will go after the bowling when needed.

“Very, very different kind of shot,” quips Sunil Gavaskar on air. It is a short ball from Prasidh Krishna but he did not give enough room to Aiden Markram and yet he managed to squeeze that ball out for a six over point. Brilliant!

SA 49-1(9)

Learning from their mistakes in the last match, South Africa today are a little more cautious and they have started a little slow tonight. But they have managed to keep their wickets intact. Aiden Markram has done the bulk of scoring with 24 off 30. Temba Bavuma is on 4.

Harshit Rana and Aiden Markram having a good back and forth. Rana finishes this over with a beautful delivery that just misses Markram’s outside edge by a whisker. Earlier, he had also forced Markram to inside edge on delivery but that ran away for a four.
