Day 3 summary

A day of hard labour comes to an end for Team India. England took the momentum garnered on Day 2 forward on Day 3 and pushed the visitors to the corner by ending the day at a massive 544/7. Joe Root, who smashed his 38th Test century and thereby left Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting behind in tally of total runs scored in Test cricket, was the hero for England on the day. He scored 150 runs to put England in a commanding position. Earlier, Ollie Pope also contributed to the scorecard by scoring 71 runs. Captain Ben Stokes also made the most of the friendly batting conditions and went unbeaten on 77*. Liam Dawson is the other man in the crease who will continue batting alongside Stokes on Day 4.

England’s exceptional batting has seemingly taken the match away from India. The hosts have gained a substantial lead of 186 at Stumps, and now it is up to India on how they tackle this immense challenge on Day 4.

England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett scored 166 for the first wicket as Jasprit Bumrah, debutant Anshul Kamboj and Mohammed Siraj were thrashed all around the park. Ravindra Jadeja picked the first wicket of the innings, dismissing Crawley, while Kamboj removed Duckett as his first wicket in international cricket.

England ended Day on 225/2 and are only 133 runs behind India. If India fail to take wickets early on, England could take a considerable lead and seal the game on Day 3 itself.
