India vs England Highlights, 2nd Test Day 2: Brook and Root fight back, steer England to 77/3 at stumps

Harry Brook and Joe Root are batting on 30 and 18 respectively, the partnership between them currently worth 52 off 81 deliveries. Prasidh Krishna and Ravindra Jadeja bowl out the final overs of the day, the latter collecting a maiden in his second over.

The hosts are back on their feet thanks to the Brook-Root stand but still have a long way to go at Edgbaston. India, on the other hand, will be hoping to break this partnership as early as possible tomorrow as they seek a sizeable first innings lead.

Mohammed Siraj convinces Shubman Gill to opt for a review after an unsuccessful LBW appeal against Harry Brook, and it turns out to be a fairly good review on India’s part, with the ball found to be clipping the top of leg. The ball was quite close to Brook’s inside edge and might have created an impression of there being some contact from the umpire’s perspective.

Brook later gets a bat-pad deflection that lobs the ball between short leg and square leg. Akash Deep is on a hat-trick in just his second over on English soil as Duckett and Pope are caught by Shubman Gill and KL Rahul – both batters nicking the ball to the slip cordon to depart for a duck!

Not only has India’s lower middle-order stood tall at Edgbaston after the collapses at Headingley, their slip catching also appears to have improved after the horrors of the first Test! Double-wicket maiden for Akash, who has been picked as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement with the latter having been rested for this game.

Mohammed Siraj is the last Indian batter to get dismissed, getting beaten by a delivery going down leg after charging down the pitch, resulting in an easy stumping for Jamie Smith.

India fall 13 short of 600 at Edgbaston, but collect 116 more than their first innings total at Headingley. And captain Shubman Gill, who produced a magnificent 269, will be hoping that score will be too high for the Englishmen to eclipse.

Captain Shubman Gill’s still going strong, and is currently batting on 168 with all-rounder Washington Sundar – picked over Kuldeep Yadav for his batting skills – having opened his account with a single. Turned out to be a near-perfect session for the visitors, one where they scored 109 runs losing just one wicket.

Gill and Jadeja would have preferred to take the visitors into the 40-minute interval unscathed. Then again, they were starting to accelerate towards the end of the session, hoping to collect quick runs, and Jadeja perished as a result.

Shoaib Bashir starts off with a maiden on the other side of the drinks break. England captain Stokes has a chat with Jadeja regarding running in the danger area ahead of the 100th over, in which Jadeja collects a boundary off Carse in the very first delivery.

Carse concedes another boundary three deliveries later, this one helping Shubman Gill surpass his highest Test score of 147 – in the series opener at Headingley. The Indian captain then keeps the strike with a single off the last ball. IND 375/5 after 100
