South Africa’s star cricketer Dewald Brevis was on fire in the second T20I against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Tuesday, August 12. The 22-year-old smashed an unbeaten 125 runs from just 56 balls, hitting 12 fours and 8 sixes. He reached his fifty in only 25 balls and then took just 16 more deliveries to get to his hundred. Thanks to his explosive knock, South Africa scored 218 for 7.

This was a big turnaround for Brevis, who had scored only 2 runs in the first T20I, where South Africa lost by 17 runs. However, the Chennai Super Kings player tore apart the Australian bowling attack in the second match and set multiple records as the Proteas won by a big margin of 53 runs.

“I have not really thought about it (the record), but extremely grateful. Just happy we won today, great to be out here on the winning side,” Brevis said after the match.

Brevis became the youngest South African to score a century in men’s T20Is at 22 years and 105 days, beating Richard Levi’s previous record. His hundred came in just 41 balls, making it the second-fastest for South Africa in the format, behind David Miller’s 35-ball century in 2017. It was also the fastest hundred ever scored against Australia in men’s T20Is, breaking Martin Guptill’s 49-ball effort from 2018.

Brevis breaks Gaikwad’s record

His score of 125 not out is now the highest by a South African in men’s T20Is, going past Faf du Plessis’ 119 against West Indies in 2015. It is also the highest score against Australia in the format, bettering CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 123 not out from 2023. Brevis became only the sixth player to score a T20I hundred against Australia, joining Gaikwad, Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Shai Hope.

Brevis also smashed the record for most sixes by a South African against Australia in a T20I, hitting eight in his innings. The previous best was five, shared by Faf du Plessis and Donavan Ferreira. His knock is now the highest score in men’s T20Is played in Australia, overtaking Shane Watson’s 124 not out against India in 2016.
