The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has landed in another controversy after a report claimed that a player with no wicketkeeping experience was picked as a backup keeper in the Delhi Under-19 squad for the upcoming Vinoo Mankad Trophy, slated to be held in Ranchi from October 9.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the 23-member squad was finalised on October 3, but the selection of one player surprised many. It is alleged that a senior DDCA official forced the junior selection committee to include the player in the team as a backup keeper despite him never keeping wickets before.
DDCA president takes action
Following the controversy, several DDCA office bearers reportedly complained to DDCA president Rohan Jaitley, who immediately took action. The report said that Jaitley removed the player’s name from the list and replaced him with a specialist wicketkeeper for the Under-19 tournament.
Apart from that, two more players were also dropped from the squad. One of them reportedly had issues with his official documents. This latest incident comes at a time when the DDCA is already facing criticism for alleged interference in team selections.
A few days ago, DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma wrote a letter to Jaitley, raising objections to the presence of three directors - Harsh Singla, Anand Verma, and Manjeet Singh - during a selection committee meeting for the Under-23 and Ranji Trophy teams.
Sharma claimed that the directors entered the meeting room uninvited and refused to leave, forcing him to postpone the meeting. In his letter, he said that their presence was against BCCI’s rules and could lead to bias in the selection process. He also mentioned that one of the directors had a family member being considered for selection.
Sharma urged Jaitley to ensure that DDCA’s selection process follows proper rules and maintains transparency. The DDCA has not yet made an official statement about the latest controversy.
