“It’s very important for spinners to back their strengths. Whenever batters put you under pressure, spinners tend to [pivot] and look for a safer option to get out of that situation. But, I believe that you should back your strengths,” Kuldeep said.

“If you are an attacking spinner, don’t let that go. Because that is your identity and if you are taking wickets while doing that work for the team, there can be nothing better. Sometimes you’ll get wickets, sometimes you don’t. But, I feel, your mindset should always be attacking.”

“Credit to him. He had a plan, which obviously involved a few of the guys in our setup who were part of this training,” Jayawardene said. “He knew what he needed to do. Even though he hasn’t played competitive cricket, he did quite a bit of skills work off-season whenever he had the time. Then he joined us on day one of our camp. We had a chat on how we wanted to start and we did a lot of simulations.

“We played quite a few practice matches and he played all of them. For someone who has played the game for such a long time, it’s muscle memory… It was a good start for him in the first game and hopefully he can continue that. I know it’s been tough, but he’s focused, he’s relaxed, and he’s contributing in a very positive way, which is great for us.”
