Bangladesh T20 World Cup Participation Highlights: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that Bangladesh are out of the 2026 T20 World Cup that starts February 7 across India and Sri Lanka. Scotland have been named as the replacement side for the event. Bangladesh had refused to travel to India where they were scheduled to play all four of their group games, citing security issues. ICC also stood its ground and maintained that there was no threat and now that deadlock has led to Bangladesh's ouster.

This is what PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has said about the Bangladesh situation

“Bangladesh has been treated unfairly. I said the same in the board meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC). You cannot have double standards, where one country can make whatever decision whenever and do the total opposite for another country.

“That is why we have taken the stand that Bangladesh is being treated unfairly and should be allowed to play the World Cup in any case. They are a major stakeholder and this injustice should not be done.”

What had ICC said on Mustafizur Rahman's ouster from IPL?

ICC had said that the issue of Rahman’s release from IPL was a totally different one and added that the BCB was “repeatedly linking its participation in the tournament to a single, isolated and unrelated development concerning one of its player’s involvement in a domestic league. This linkage has no bearing on the tournament’s security framework or the conditions governing participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Ex-BCB official says Bangladesh fell right into the trap of India's right-wing parties

“We had already taken a stand and we had no other choice. Our stand was either we play the World Cup if we’re allowed to play in Sri Lanka, or we won’t play. That’s what I am trying to say that we shouldn’t have taken a stand straight away. That’s not right. Talk first. Everything can be resolved through talk. So that would be a win-win situation for everybody. And we, we have played into the hands of the extreme rightist political parties in India. We walked into the trap set by the extremely rightist parties of India. It is their victory not our governments,” former BCB general secretary Syed Ashraful Haque told Cricbuzz.

Former BCB general secretary believes the board could have handled the situation better

“Very unfortunate that the present board is totally subservient to decision of a government that won’t be around after a few weeks, but the damage left behind and possible seclusion from the international cricket community will have far reaching consequences as Bangladesh will be considered as potential trouble monger in cricket circles. Any self respecting cricket board would have spread out the ICC security measures to the team and asked the players to take a call, if they felt insecure then by all means don’t go, but the call should have been from the players, not from the government or the board. They have deprived the players of their lifetime ambitions of playing a World Cup, just to suit a questionable agenda,” Syed Ashraful Haque told Cricbuzz.

Bangladesh appeal to the dispute resolution committee might be rejected

The BCB has reportedly written to the ICC asking for its request to move T20 World Cup matches to be heard by the independent dispute resolution committee. However, since the committee is not an appellate forum, reports suggest that the move is unlikely to change the ICC’s original decision. Bangladesh’s participation in the tournament remains uncertain for now.

Bangladesh T20 World Cup 2026 participation Live Updates: Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 is currently hanging in the balance as the standoff between the Bangladesh government, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) continues.

With the tournament set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February-March, the situation has escalated quickly after Bangladesh refused to travel to India over security concerns. Now, there’s a possibility of Bangladesh being replaced if they refuse to travel to India after the ICC formally rejected their request.

Bangladesh’s sports adviser Asif Nazrul has once again refused to travel to India and said the country is still hopeful that the ICC will reconsider its position. Bangladesh are placed in Group C of the T20 World Cup 2026 and are scheduled to play their matches in Kolkata and Mumbai.

“We are hopeful that ICC will give us the opportunity to play in Sri Lanka. It is our government that has decided not to go to India. Our concerns are genuine, but the ICC has not acknowledged them. The ICC has not accepted our position. We want to play, and we still hope that the ICC will accept our concerns,” he said.

BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul also slammed the decision and reiterated Nazrul’s comments. He said that Bangladesh want to play the World Cup, but not in India, where all of their games are scheduled to be played.

“We will continue to communicate with the ICC. We want to play the World Cup, but we won’t play in India. We will keep fighting. There were some shocking calls in the ICC Board Meeting. The Mustafizur issue is not an isolated single issue. They (India) were the sole decision makers in that issue,” he said.

The issue started after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise to release Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. He was the only Bangladesh player sold for this year’s edition. The reason behind the decision is unknown, but it is believed that the BCCI took the step following political pressure due to attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
