In a massive embarrassment for India, two members of the Australian women’s cricket team, who are currently in India for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, were allegedly stalked and molested by a bike rider in Indore on Thursday while stepping out for a walk.

The names of the players have been withheld by the team management and police, who arrested the accused Aqeel Khan on Friday.

The shameful incident took place on 23 October, a day after Australia’s match against England at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. As per a report in news agency PTI, the incident took place in the Khajrana Road area in the morning when the two players, along with their teammates, left their hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel, on foot for a nearby café.

The police have stated that Aqeel Khan stalked the two players during their walk and allegedly touched one of them inappropriately before fleeing the spot.

Springing into action, Assistant Commissioner of Police Himani Mishra registered the First Information Report under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after meeting the players and recording their statements.

The arrest was made with the help of a bystander who had managed to note down the bike’s registration number.

Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi told PTI that Aqeel Khan is a history-sheeter and the investigation in the matter is underway.

“Khan has prior criminal cases registered against him, and an investigation is ongoing,” said Raghuvanshi.
