The 17th edition of the Asia Cup has entered its final week with the Super 4s, the second round of the tournament, having got underway over the weekend. Bangladesh and India got a head-start with victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively, with Pakistan later rekindling their campaign with a victory over the Lankan Lions.
The latest match of the tournament witnessed India defeat Bangladesh despite being far from their best. The Men in Blue raced to 72/0 at the end of the powerplay after Bangladesh’s stand-in captain Jaker Ali opted to field, but could only manage 168/6 in the end with the middle-order struggling to collect boundaries in the remainder of the innings.
And despite dropping as many as five catches, India were able to bowl the Bangla Tigers out for just 127 in reply, collecting a 41-run victory to becoming the first team to qualify for the final.
What’s next in the Asia Cup Super 4s
India’s victory over Bangladesh has knocked Sri Lanka, who had suffered their second successive defeat of the Super 4s on Tuesday with a five-wicket loss at the hands of Pakistan in what was the final match of the tournament in Abu Dhabi.
Bangladesh will be in action less than 24 hours after their loss against India as they face Pakistan in a virtual semi-final, the winner going on to face India in Sunday’s final. The Suryakumar Yadav-led Men in Blue’s final Super 4s fixture against Sri Lanka, meanwhile, effectively becomes a dead rubber, in which the Lankans will be playing for pride.
