The 17th edition of the Asia Cup has entered its final week with the Super 4s, the second round of the tournament, having got underway over the weekend. Bangladesh and India have the head-start as far qualifying for Sunday’s final is concerned, having defeated Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively with the Men in Blue the only team so far to win all of their matches.
The Bangla Tigers chased down a competitive 169-run target set by the Lankan Lions, who had won all three matches in the group stage, with a delivery to spare in Dubai. Saif Hassan (61) and Towhid Hridoy (58) starred in the victory with half-centuries, as did pacer Mustafizur Rahman (3/20) and off-spinner Mahedi Hasan (2/25) as Bangladesh recovered from a shaky start to win what is popularly dubbed the ‘Naagin Derby’.
The following day witnessed the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team collect a second victory over Pakistan in as many meetings despite their opponents putting up a much better fight with the bat. Sahibzada Farhan’s 45-ball 58 helped the Men in Green post 171/5. Pakistan’s hopes of beating India for the first time in three years, however, were quickly deflated by an explosive 105-run opening stand between Abhishek Sharma (74) and Shubman Gill (47), which setup a comfortable six-wicket victory.
What’s next in the Asia Cup Super 4s
The tournament enters its first rest day on Monday, with the action set to resume on Tuesday at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium, where Pakistan and Sri Lanka face each other in a contest in which the losing team will face the prospect of flying back home ahead of the final.
That will be followed by India facing Bangladesh on Wednesday, in which the winner will likely seal their berth in Sunday’s finale.
Pakistan then face Bangladesh on Thursday while India and Sri Lanka – finalists in the previous edition of the Asia Cup in 2023 that took place in the ODI format – lock horns in the final Super 4s game on the following day.
The top two teams on the table will then face each other in the final.
