On Thursday (April 2), US President Donald Trump showed the door to his Attorney General, Pam Bondi. This is the second high-profile exit from the Trump administration in a month; earlier, the US president removed Kristi Noem from her position as Homeland Security Secretary.
But the ousters aren’t done yet, with reports stating that the US president, who is engaged in a war against Iran, is also looking to fire FBI Director Kash Patel and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. A Politico report even stated that the US president has expressed frustration and disappointment with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
What’s going on in Trump’s Cabinet? Are there more firings on the way?
You’re fired, Bondi!
On Thursday (April 2), Trump said that Pam Bondi is out as his attorney general, putting an end to her 14-month tenure.
“Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year,” Trump said in a statement. He added, “We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much-needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.”
In her own statement, Bondi called the job “the honour of a lifetime” and said she would be working over the next month to transition the position to Todd Blanche, one of Trump’s former personal lawyers and the current Deputy Attorney General.
Over the next month I will be working tirelessly to transition the office of Attorney General to the amazing Todd Blanche before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration.…

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Bondi was informed of her ouster a day earlier while she travelled with Trump in the presidential limousine to the Supreme Court to hear the arguments in the birthright citizenship case. During the drive, Trump told her, “I think it’s time,” she later told an associate, according to the American news outlet.
Bondi’s firing stems from Trump’s frustration with her over the fallout from the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and furious that she had not successfully prosecuted a number of his political enemies.
A sign of this frustration was made public by the US president in a since-deleted Truth Social post last year, where he wrote: “Pam: I have reviewed over 30 statements and posts saying that, essentially, ‘same old story as last time, all talk, no action. Nothing is being done. What about Comey, Adam “Shifty” Schiff, Leticia??? They’re all guilty as hell, but nothing is going to be done.’ Then we almost put in a Democrat supported US Attorney in Virginia, with a really bad Republican past.”
“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility,” he added. “They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), Over nothing. Justice must be served, now!!!”
In fact, in early January, when an ally mentioned Bondi’s name, the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump launched a rant, saying she was doing a “terrible job” and expressing frustration that he chose her for attorney general.
In her 14 months as Attorney General, Bondi has tried her hardest to appease the US president. She has heaped lavish praise at congressional hearings and White House events, fired prosecutors deemed insufficiently loyal to the president, and opened investigations into his political foes. The Justice Department even had a giant banner with Trump’s face on it hung on its main building.
However, none of it seemed enough and has resulted in her exit.
Replacement for Bondi
Reports state that Bondi will remain for the next month. However, Trump has named his former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, to serve as the acting chief of the Justice Department. Blanche rose to prominence representing the US president in criminal cases that consumed the four years between his first and second terms.
In fact, Blanche led Trump’s criminal defence team, representing him in cases, including the New York hush money case, which ended in his conviction on 34 felony counts, and a pair of federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith, both of which have been abandoned. In a social media post, Trump called Blanche “a very talented and respected legal mind.”
According to The New York Times, Trump may name former Republican congressman Lee Zeldin, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, to be the next attorney general.
More firings to come
However, Bondi’s removal isn’t the only ouster to take place. According to a report in The Guardian, Trump is also looking to fire his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.
The report states that the US president has polled Cabinet members on removing Gabbard from her position, venting frustration that she shielded a former deputy who undercut his rationale for war with Iran.
Trump has soured on Gabbard after she failed to condemn former counterterrorism chief Joe Kent’s criticism of the administration’s decision to go to war with Iran. Kent’s departure and his criticism of the war angered Trump, but the US president expressed additional frustration at Gabbard seeming to defend Kent and appearing reluctant to defend the administration’s position to strike at Iran.
Gabbard has also differed with the Trump administration in the past, earning her ire from the US president. Before last year’s 12-day war against Iran, Gabbard had testified that Iran had not decided to build a nuclear bomb. To which, Trump had said, “She’s wrong,” before authorising strikes on Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites at Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz.
However, when asked whether he still had confidence in Gabbard’s leadership as recently as last week, Trump on Air Force One told reporters: “Yeah, sure. I mean, she’s a little bit different in her thought process than me, but that doesn’t make somebody not available to serve.”
Advisors have also warned Trump against firing Gabbard, as such a high-profile vacancy could cause political distractions.
But Gabbard isn’t the only one earning Trump’s ire. The Atlantic has reported that even FBI director Kash Patel is in the US president’s firing line. And this seems even more likely with former FBI agent Kyle Seraphin telling far-right radio host Alex Jones that a decision would be made soon.
“There is a decent possibility that Kash Patel is fired today and there is a total reshuffle,” Seraphin said, citing two sources. “The question is why, and my guess is that Trump wants to make it look like it’s his idea and not while he is under pressure.”

Patel’s tenure as FBI director has been anything but smooth sailing. Earlier this week, three fired FBI agents sued the agency to try to get their jobs back, saying in a class action lawsuit that they were illegally punished for their participation in an investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
Patel has also faced criticism for providing jet rides to his girlfriend as well as his handling of the Epstein files.
The Politico has reported that Trump is also looking to oust Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “He’s very angry, and he’s going to be moving people,” an administration official told Politico.
A second, senior official added that Trump is focusing on those officials that he feels have “underperformed or who have generated too much negative attention.”
With Trump in the White House, the future remains unknown. Will there be more comings and goings of officials — only time will tell.
