Deadline for the arrest of South Korea’s Yoon Suk Yeol
The deadline for the arrest warrant of South Korea’s impeached leader Yoon Suk Yeol over a failed martial law bid is Monday, January 6.
Yoon, who has already been suspended from duty by lawmakers, would become the first sitting president in South Korean history to be arrested if the warrant is carried out.
Trial of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy on corruption charges
On Monday, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and 12 others will stand trial on charges of corruption and illegal financing related to alleged Libyan funding of his successful 2007 presidential bid.
The conservative former president, in office from 2007 to 2012, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted in the case. He is also fighting various other legal cases.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby ends official duties
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion, will wrap up his official duties on Monday.
Stephen Cottrell, the archbishop of York and the second-most senior bishop in the Church of England, will take over his duties.
US NSA Jake Sullivan to visit India
US NSA Jake Sullivan is set to visit India to take stock of India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
His visit will be the last high-profile visit to New Delhi from the outgoing Biden administration.
It is also learned that he will hold wide-ranging talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
ECI to publish final Delhi electoral rolls
The Election Commission of India will publish final Delhi electoral roll on Monday, before the state goes to assembly elections, which is likely in February.
Earlier, the chief electoral officer’s office had said that the poll body received 485,624 applications for registration of new voters (Form 6) and 82,450 applications for deletion of voters (Form 7), either due to relocation or deaths, over the past month.
Services PMI data to be released
The Indian Services Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for December 2024 will be released today.
The actual value was 60.8, an increase from 58.4 in November.
SC to hear petitions of Amazon and Flipkart
The Supreme Court will be hearing over petitions of Amazon and Flipkart challenging an order of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) ordering a probe against them for alleged malpractices.
The fair trade regulator CCI ordered the probe against the e-commerce giants for malpractices such as deep discounting and tie-ups with preferred sellers on their platforms. Following this, the companies filed separate petitions in various high courts, challenging the investigation.
MP High Court to hear matter concerning the Union Carbide toxic waste
The Madhya Pradesh High Court will be hearing the matter related to the Union Carbide India Limited’s (UCIL) toxic waste in Bhopal, which has a population of about 1.75 lakh.
Following a December 3, 2024, Madhya Pradesh High Court order, the waste is being shifted to Pithampur industrial town in western MP’s Dhar district for disposal (incineration) which may take up to nine months.
Mamata Banerjee to visit Ganga Sagar
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to visit Ganga Sagar to review mela preparations.
The Ganga Sagar Mela, which coincides with Makar Sankranti, attracts numerous spiritual devotees every year.
TN Assembly maiden session for 2025
The first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for 2025 will begin on January 6 with the customary address by Governor R N Ravi, Assembly Speaker M Appavu informed here on Friday.
The session’s duration will be decided by the Assembly Business Advisory Committee which will meet on that day.
Malaysian court to hear ex-PM Najib Razak’s appeal for house arrest
Malaysia’s Court of Appeal is set to hear a bid by former Prime Minister Najib Razak to overturn a lower court decision in July that struck out his request to confirm the existence of and execute a royal order entitling to serve his sentence under house arrest.
He is serving a six-year jail sentence for corruption linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal.
