Donald Trump is set to complete one year of his second term as US president today amid protests. Several events, including the ‘Free America Walkout,’ are expected to take place in the country to mark the inauguration of the president’s second term.
Today marks the deadline for approval of the Chinese embassy in London. The US Supreme Court is scheduled to release opinions on whether Donald Trump is exceeded his authority while imposing tariffs on other nations. In India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to officially announce its 12th national president.
Here is all that is set to take place today.
Protests to mark first anniversary of Trump 2.0
Grassroots organisations are set to hold protests across the United States as Donald Trump marks one year of his second term of presidency. The Women’s March has organised a nationwide walkout to protest the Trump administration’s policies, including ICE raids, healthcare cuts, and the deployment of National Guard troops in cities.
Over 600 to 1,000 events are planned across the country, with participants encouraged to walk out of workplaces, classrooms, and homes between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. As opposed to the large-scale weekend rallies that the Women’s March became known for following Trump’s first inauguration, organizers have planned a weekday walkout this year.
Several other public events will also take place across the country to mark the day. One of them is a retrospective titled “Trump: The First Year of His Second Term”, which is co-presented by The New York Times Opinion.
Last day approval of the Chinese embassy in London
Today marks the last day to decide whether to approve China’s application for a new “super embassy” at the historic Royal Mint Court site in London.
If approved, the site would become the largest diplomatic mission in Europe, consolidating all of China’s London offices into one 20,000-square-meter complex.
The government is widely expected to green-light the project. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated that while national security is “nonnegotiable,” maintaining diplomatic dialogue with China is essential. The approval is seen as a key step to smooth relations ahead of the Prime Minister’s first official bilateral visit to China, expected later in January 2026.
US Supreme Court may rule on Trump’s tariffs
The US Supreme Court is scheduled to release opinions on whether Donald Trump has exceeded his authority while imposing tariffs on other nations. The court is evaluating whether Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose “reciprocal” tariffs and duties aimed at trade partners like China, Canada, and Mexico.
If the court rules against the administration, it could declare the tariffs unlawful, potentially requiring the government to stop collecting duties and return billions in revenue already received. Opinions were previously expected on January 9 and January 14, but the court did not address the tariff case on those dates.
BJP to announce national president
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to officially announce its 12th national president today. Nitin Nabin, who has been serving as the party’s national working president since December 14, is widely expected to be elected to the position unopposed.
The nomination process was held on Monday (January 19) between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Nabin’s candidacy is backed by top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
At 45 years old, Nitin Nabin is poised to become the youngest ever national president in the BJP’s history. A five-term MLA from the Bankipur constituency in Bihar, Nabin is the son of the late BJP veteran Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha. He has previously served as a minister in the Bihar government and was the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
