The United States is set to deploy military aircraft to Greenland as diplomatic and military tensions increase over President Donald Trump’s push to acquire the self-governing Danish territory. The aircraft will arrive at Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. The move is linked to planned defence activities. It comes amid heightened scrutiny of US intentions in the Arctic.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) said on Monday local time that its aircraft would soon arrive at the base, formerly known as Thule Air Force Base. The deployment is part of long-planned activities designed to support routine operations to defend North America.

Norad said the move builds on existing defence cooperation between the United States, Canada and Denmark. It added that the plans were coordinated with Copenhagen, with Greenland informed in advance.

“All supporting forces are operating with the requisite diplomatic clearances,” Norad said. The command added that the aircraft would support sustained and dispersed operations across its three regions — Alaska, Canada and the continental United States.

Strategic importance of Pituffik Space Base

Pituffik Space Base is a key US military installation and communications hub. It hosts a missile warning system that is critical to North American defence. Its location in the High Arctic gives it strategic significance amid growing global interest in the region.

The US move comes as Denmark has stepped up its own military presence in Greenland. According to the Financial Times, several aircraft carrying Danish troops and military equipment landed on the island on Monday. This added to the more than 200 soldiers already stationed there.

Danish defence forces said a substantial contingent of troops, along with the head of the country’s army, were deployed to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. The deployment followed a multinational military exercise led by Danish forces over the weekend.

Trump remarks trigger wider European reaction

The heightened military activity follows renewed tensions after Trump declined to rule out using force to take control of Greenland. The US President has argued that the territory is vital for American security, citing strategic concerns linked to Russia and China.

His stance has prompted strong reactions across Europe. Germany and France have called for a clear European response to Washington’s threats to impose tariffs on countries opposing US plans for Greenland. They have also urged de-escalation.

European Union officials warned that retaliatory measures could follow if the US proceeds with trade penalties.

NATO and Denmark’s position on sovereignty

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he discussed the importance of the Arctic and Greenland’s role in collective security during a meeting with Denmark’s defence minister. He noted Copenhagen’s efforts to invest in key defence capabilities in the region.

Denmark has said it is open to discussions on an increased US military presence in Greenland. However, it has firmly rejected any transfer of sovereignty over the territory.
