Canada is assessing the possibility of deploying troops to Greenland as part of upcoming Nato exercises, with discussions taking place at senior levels and a decision still pending.
Military officials have presented operational plans to the government and are awaiting a decision from Prime Minister Mark Carney, according to the sources, reported Reuters.
Trump remarks add pressure on Canada
President Donald Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland have created a delicate challenge for Carney. He is seeking to demonstrate solidarity with European allies while also maintaining a workable relationship with Trump. The US president has previously threatened to annex Canada.
“We’re concerned about this escalation, to be absolutely clear… we always will support sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, wherever their geographic location is,” Carney told reporters in Doha on Sunday.
Several European countries sent small numbers of military personnel to Greenland last week. Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands said they are dispatching military staff to prepare for larger drills planned later this year.
US deploys military aircraft to Greenland
The United States is set to deploy military aircraft to Greenland amid diplomatic and military tensions over President Trump’s push to acquire the self-governing Danish territory. The aircraft will arrive at Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. The move is linked to planned defence activities. It comes amid heightened scrutiny of US intentions in the Arctic.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) said on Monday local time that its aircraft would soon arrive at the base, formerly known as Thule Air Force Base. The deployment is part of long-planned activities designed to support routine operations to defend North America.
Norad said the move builds on existing defence cooperation between the United States, Canada and Denmark. It added that the plans were coordinated with Copenhagen, with Greenland informed in advance.
“All supporting forces are operating with the requisite diplomatic clearances,” Norad said. The command added that the aircraft would support sustained and dispersed operations across its three regions — Alaska, Canada and the continental United States.
