It is set to be a busy Friday with several events lined up for the day.
Firstly, China and the United States will hold economic and trade talks in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Security Council is expected to hold an open debate on the future of the United Nations.
The presidential elections will take place in Ireland today. Cryptocurrency exchange WazirX is set to resume operations today. Pakistan’s women’s cricket team is set to face Sri Lanka’s cricket team at the 2025 ODI Women’s World Cup.
Here is all that is set to take place across today.
China, US to hold economic and trade talks in Malaysia
China and the United States will hold the next round of trade talks in Malaysia today. The world’s two biggest economies are attempting to avoid further escalation of the damaging tit-for-tat tariff war that the two nations have been engaging in.
Earlier, Beijing’s commerce ministry said, “As agreed by both China and the United States, vice premier He Lifeng will lead a delegation to Malaysia from October 24 to 27 and hold economic and trade talks with the United States.”
Led by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the delegations will meet ahead of the upcoming APEC summit.
Security Council meeting on the future of UN
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold discussions on the future of the organisation. The members will hold an open debate titled “The United Nations Organization: Looking into the Future.”
The open debate will explore issues related to the UN’s future, including the implementation of the UN Charter, efforts to promote dialogue, and the long-term vision for the organisation. The meeting is a signature event of Russia’s October presidency and will take place on UN Day, which marks the 80th anniversary of the Charter’s entry into force.
The discussion comes at a time when the UN, and particularly the Security Council, faces immense geopolitical tensions and criticism over its handling of major conflicts.
Presidential election in Ireland
Ireland will be holding its Presidential election today to elect its 10th head of state. The election comes after Michael D Higgins’ two terms in office.
The leading candidates in the fray are independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys. Humphreys belongs to the centre-right Fine Gael party. Her campaign highlights her experience in government and connections to rural Ireland.
WazirX to resume operations in India
Cryptocurrency exchange WazirX will resume its operations in India from today. This comes after the company suspended operations following a major security breach.
The company has now successfully restructured itself in a process approved by the High Court of Singapore. In an official release, WazirX said that the relaunch — sanctioned by the Singapore High Court and backed by its creditors — would feature zero trading fees across all trading pairs as part of a limited-period “Restart Offer.”
2025 ODI Women’s World Cup: Pakistan v Sri Lanka
The women’s teams of Pakistan and Sri Lanka will clash with each other for the 2025 ODI Women’s World Cup today. The match will be played at R Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama, Colombo.
The Sri Lankans have finally managed a win, sealing their victory in a thriller against Bangladesh. While they remain in the contest for the semi-final, Sri Lanka needs a miracle for it to go their way.
With their loss against South Africa, Pakistan have been ruled out of contention for the semi-finals and will want to end their tournament on a high in their final game
