The BJP is headed for a big win in the Delhi Assembly Election if trends are to be believed. According to the Election Commission website, the saffron party is leading in 48 of the 70 seats and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 22. However, it is not yet over for the incumbent party as some seats are too close to call.

We take a look at some of the tight contests.

New Delhi

One of the most nail-biting fights is unfolding in the New Delhi constituency. Here AAP chief and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is up against BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh (Parvesh Verma).

Kejriwal who was leading for a while is now trailing against Verma. The BJP candidate is leading by over 1800 votes as of now, according to the Election Commission.

Kalkaji

It is one of the most watched seats in the election. Ramesh Bidhuri of the BJP is giving a tough fight to Delhi CM Atishi. He is leading by over 2800 votes.

Congress’ Alka Lamba is a distance third with more than 25,000 votes behind.

Jangpura

In Jangpura, there is a see-saw contest. Manish Sisodia who was leading is now trailing against BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah. The former deputy CM is behind by a 500-odd votes.

Sisodia who earlier represented Patparganj changed his seat to Jangpura. He has now conceded defeat.

Greater Kailash

In the Greater Kailash constituency, BJP and AAP candidates are locked in a tough battle. Shikha Roy is leading against Saurabh Bharadwaj by 2039 votes.

Bharadwaj is a three-time AAP MLA and Delhi’s minister of health.

Malviya Nagar

In Malviyar Nagar, Satish Upadhyay of the BJP is leading against Somnath Bharti. There is a difference of 3937 votes between the two.

Tughlakabad

In Tughlakabad, Sahi Ram of the AAP is leading. The second in the race is Rohtash Kumar of the BJP. The AAP leader is 5,406 votes ahead.

Rohini

In Rohini, BJP’s Virendra Gupta is ahead of AAP’s Pradeep Mitall. The difference is 10,956 votes.

Madipur

In Madipur, BJP’s Kailash Gangwal is leading against AAP’s Rakhi Birla. The difference is 7066 votes.

According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP vote share is 47.06 per cent while AAP is 43.10 per cent. The Congress, which has not won a single seat, has a vote share of 6.61 per cent.

In 2020, the AAP vote share was 54 per cent, the BJP’s 38 per cent and the Congress’s was around 4.5 per cent.

In this election, the BJP and Congress appear to have eaten to AAP’s vote share.
