Bypoll election results 2024: Who are the big winners?

The counting for bypolls in 48 Assembly seats in 14 states and two Lok Sabha seats — Kerala’s Wayanad and Maharashtra’s Nanded is — underway. The BJP is leading in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh Assembly seats. TMC has won three Assembly seats in West Bengal, while AAP is leading in Punjab’s three seats. Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi is set to win Wayanad with a massive margin and BJP candidate Santukrao Hambarde is leading in Nanded

Bypoll election results 2024: Who are the big winners?
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has made her electoral debut by contesting in Wayanad, earlier held by her brother Rahul Gandhi. PTI

The counting of votes for byelections is underway.

Over the past few weeks, bypolls were held on 48 assembly seats in 14 states: Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Byelections were also held on two Lok Sabha seats — Kerala’s Wayanad and Maharashtra’s Nanded.

Here’s a detailed look at who is leading and where.

What’s happening in Lok Sabha bypolls?

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has made her electoral debut by contesting in Wayanad , earlier held by her brother Rahul Gandhi.

The election was necessitated here after Rahul won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats and retained the latter.

At the time of writing this report, Priyanka Gandhi is leading in Wayanad with over 5 lakh votes. Communist Party of India’s Sathyan Mokeri is trailing with over one lakh votes, while the BJP’s Navya Haridas is in the third spot with nearly 60,000 votes.

In Maharashtra’s Nanded Lok Sabha seat, the BJP is ahead of the Congress. But then again, it is a close call. Santukrao Marotrao Hambarde of the BJP is ahead of Congress contender Chavan Ravindra Vasantrao by 839 votes.

What’s happening in Assembly bypolls?

Assam

In the four Assam seats of Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, and Behali, the BJP and its allies are in the lead.

Tanzil Hussain of Congress is leading in the party’s bastion, Samaguri.

Diganta Ghatowal has registered a victory in Behali.

Bihar

BJP candidates are leading in Tarari and Ramgarh constituencies, while Janata Dal (United)’s Manorama Devi has secured a win in Belaganj.

In Tarari, BJP’s Vishal Prashant is leading by a margin of over 10,000 votes. Ashok Kumar Singh is leading in Ramgarh by 705 votes over his nearest rival, Satish Kumar Singh Yadav of the BSP, after the completion of seven rounds of counting.

Deepa Kumari of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) has registered a victory in Imamganj.

Chhattisgarh

Only one seat is up for grabs in Chhattisgarh – Raipur City South .

BJP’s Sunil Kumar Soni is leading the constituency, according to the information available on the Election Commission of India website..

Gujarat

In Gujarat, Gulabsinh Pirabhai Rajput of Congress is leading the Vav seat .

Karnataka

Congress is leading in all three assembly seats – Shiggaon, Sandur, and Channapatna.

Congress’s Pathan Yasirahmedkhan is leading the race in Shiggaon, while in Sandur, its E Annapoorna Tukaram has secured a win and in Channapatna, its CP Yogeeshwara who came victorious.

Kerala

Bypolls were held in two assembly seats – Palakkad and Chelakkara.

In Palakkad, Congress’ Rahul Mamkootathil has secured a win, while in Chelakkara, its CPI(M)’s UR Pradeep is leading the race.

Madhya Pradesh

The BJP is leading in both seats that were up for grabs – Vijaypur and Budhni.

In Vijapur, its Ramniwas Rawat leading, while in Budhni, its Ramakant Bhargava.

Meghalaya

The byelection was held in only one seat – Gambegre, where Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma of the National People’s Party emerged victorious.

Punjab

Bypolls here were held on four assembly seats: Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Gidderbaha and Barnala.

The four seats are divided between Aam Aadmi Party and Congress.

AAP’s Dr Ishank Kumar is leading in Chabbewal, Gurdeep Singh Randhawa in Dera Baba Nanak, and Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon in Gidderbaha.

Congress’ Kuldeep Singh has secured a win in Barnala.

Rajasthan

Bypolls were held on seven seats in Rajasthan: Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Deoli-Uniara, Khinwsar, Chorasi, Salumber and Ramgarh.

The BJP’s Rajendra Bhamboo is leading in Jhunjhunu, Rajendra Gurjar in Deoli-Uniara, Sukhavant Singh in Ramgarh, and Rewant Ram Danga in Khinwsar.

While Congress is leading in Dausa, the Bharat Adivasi Party has taken the lead in Salumber and Chorasi.

Sikkim

The bypolls were held on two assembly seats: Namchi-Singhithang and Soreng-Chakung.

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha fielded candidates from both constituencies.

Satish Chandra Rai from Namchi-Singhithang and Aditya Golay (Tamang) from Soreng-Chakung won uncontested.

Uttarakhand

BJP’s Asha Nautiyal is leading over Congress’s Manoj Rawat in the only Kedarnath consitutency for the bypoll.

Uttar Pradesh

The byelections were held across nine assembly constituencies in the state.

Initial results show strong performances from the BJP and its coalition partner, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), who are leading in seven constituencies, including Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Phulpur, Katehari, and Majhawan.

The Samajwadi Party is leading in Karhal and Sishamau.

West Bengal

The bypolls results for six assembly seats – Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST) – in West Bengal are crucial test for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

TMC’s Sangita Roy has won Sitai (SC), while Jayprakash Toppo has registered a victory in Madarihat, and Sanat Dey has won Naihati.

Sujoy Hazra of TMC is leading in Medinipur, Falguni Singhababu in Taldangra, and SK Rabiul Islam in Haroa.
