A 30-year-old Gurmuk Singh, aka Gary, was fatally stabbed in Ilford, East London. The British Sikh man was found injured at his residence with a stab wound in his left thigh, which was the cause of his tragic death. According to the Metropolitan Police, Amardeep Singh, a man known to Gurmuk, has been charged with his murder. What happened?

A 30-year-old British Sikh man was fatally stabbed in Ilford, East London, in what police believe was a targeted attack involving people who were familiar with each other.

The victim, identified as Gurmuk Singh, also known as Gary, was attacked on July 23 at a residential address on Felbrigge Road.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite paramedics’ best efforts, Singh was pronounced dead at the property.

An inquest into his death has since been opened and adjourned, while officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. Here’s what we know

Who was Gurmuk Singh?

Gurmuk Singh, affectionately known as Gary, has been remembered by his family as a “well-loved man” with an incredible ability to connect with others.

In a heartfelt tribute released through the police, his family said, “A true social butterfly, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. Gary will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.”

On Thursday, the Metropolitan Police formally identified Singh, and a post-mortem confirmed that a stab wound to the left thigh was the cause of death.

They also announced that 27-year-old Amardeep Singh had been arrested and charged with his murder. He remains in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on January 5, 2026.

The police were called to the scene by the London Ambulance Service, responding to reports of an altercation at a residential address. “Officers attended as Gary was treated for stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he sadly died at the scene,” the Met said in a statement.

In connection with the incident, detectives also arrested four others: a 29-year-old man and three women aged 29, 30, and 54. All four have since been released on bail. They are expected to return for further questioning in October as investigations continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke of the Met’s Specialist Crime North unit said that the incident is believed to be isolated: “An incident of this nature sends shockwaves throughout the local area and we understand the direct impact on the community.”

She added: “People can expect to see an uptick in police presence while officers conduct initial investigations. Please do not hesitate to speak to them if you have any concerns at all.”

Crimes on the rise in the UK

Gary’s tragic death comes amid a wider spike in violent crime across the UK.

According to 2024 figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), crimes experienced by individuals and households in England and Wales rose by 10 per cent compared to the previous year.

Robbery, violence with injury, and fraud saw particularly sharp increases in the 12 months leading up to June 2024, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.

Shoplifting also hit a record high, rising by 29 per cent to reach its highest level in 20 years, as per police data.

Robbery hit an estimated 1,39,000 incidents, compared with 60,000 the previous year. Violence with injury rose to 5,62,000 incidents, up from around 3,76,000.

Dame Diana Johnson, minister for crime, policing and fire, acknowledged the gravity of the situation:

“Too many town centres have been decimated by record levels of shoplifting, and communities have been left shaken by rising levels of knife crime, snatch theft and robbery,” she told the BBC.

“This cannot continue,” Johnson added, pledging to boost police presence and strengthen laws on shoplifting to restore public confidence.
