The Creator movie review: John David Washington & Madeleine Yuna Voyles shine in a visually exhilarating sci-fi epic

But The Creator is original, ambitious and colossal in each and every frame. After delivering franchise movies like Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, filmmaker Gareth Edwards has now come up with an epic motion picture, which is set in 2070. Talking about the plot, it starts with mankind making a huge mistake by letting artificial intelligence (AI) take control of its defence systems, which later results in a nuclear explosion that kills half of the Los Angeles population. Since that catastrophe, the West decides to outlaw AI. However, ‘New Asia’ continues to harbour Simulants (flat-headed humanoid robots) who have a complete human-like structure except for the metallic, tubular holes in the backs of their necks. The New Asia humans live happily with Simulants, however, World War 3 is declared on New Asia, but US politicians quickly point out that the war is against the mechanical population and not the general people in New Asia. When the US military comes to know the AI’s mysterious architect, known as Nirmata (The Creator) has created a weapon, which could end the war, the high-ranked officers send a soldier, Joshua ( John David Washington ) to destroy the hidden laboratory of Nirmata but the mission gets complicated due to his past encounter and emotional bond with Simulants. Director Gareth Edwards splendidly weaves the narrative which has the theme of sci-fi but the essence of a human drama. He goes all out to give viewers an immersive experience with his rich, adventurous and big-screen spectacle. Talking about the performances, John David Washington delivers one of his best acts as Joshua. His layered portrayal showcases a variety of emotions and he impresses in aspect, especially his trait of vulnerability. Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Alphie is simply amazing. Her expressive eyes and innocent face make a special place in your heart. Gemma Chan as Maya aka The Creator is the soul of the story. However, we wanted to see more of her. On the whole, The Creator is an intriguing, stimulating and intense affair, which addresses one of the greatest issues of our age. A tough choice to make between head and heart. The Creator will release on 29 September in cinemas Rating: 3.5 (out of 5 stars)
