Taylor Swift sued over 'The Life of a Showgirl', lawsuit claims trademark infringement: All we know so far

Pop superstar Taylor Swift is facing a lawsuit over her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, with a performer alleging that the project borrows heavily from her long-established “Showgirl” brand.

What the lawsuit claims

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in California by Maren Wade (legal name Maren Flagg), accuses Swift and her team of trademark infringement and brand confusion.

According to a report in AP, Wade argues that Swift’s album title and branding are strikingly similar to her own project, Confessions of a Showgirl, a column she began in 2014, which later evolved into a live touring show. According to the complaint, both works share “the same structure, the same dominant phrase, and the same overall commercial impression,” and are aimed at similar audiences.

The ‘reverse confusion’ argument

A key part of the lawsuit is the claim of “reverse confusion”, a legal concept where a larger, more commercially powerful entity overwhelms a smaller brand. The filing argues that Swift’s global reach could cause audiences to assume Wade’s original work is actually copying the pop star, effectively diluting a brand built over more than a decade.

Trademark concerns flagged earlier

The lawsuit also points out that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had raised objections to the “ Life of a Showgirl” name. Officials reportedly flagged a “likelihood of confusion” with existing trademarks, including Wade’s Confessions of a Showgirl, suggesting Swift’s team had prior notice of potential overlap. Despite this, the suit claims the branding continued to be used.

About the album

_The Life of a Showgirl_, Swift’s 12th studio album, released in October 2025 and became an instant commercial success, selling around 4 million copies in its first week. The album’s visuals lean heavily into a Las Vegas-inspired cabaret aesthetic, with Swift featured in showgirl-style imagery, a creative direction now central to the dispute.

Defendants and response

Apart from Swift, the lawsuit also names her trademark management company, record label, and merchandising arm as defendants. Swift’s representatives have declined to comment on the matter so far.

What Wade is seeking

Wade is asking the court to permanently bar Swift and her team from using the “Life of a Showgirl” name and branding and award monetary damages, including profits linked to the disputed branding.

The case sets up a high-profile legal battle over branding, ownership, and creative identity, pitting an independent performer against one of the biggest names in global pop. If the court sides with Wade, it could have significant implications for how major artists approach branding tied to existing creative works.
