R Madhavan says a '3 Idiots' sequel would be 'idiotic': 'All three of us are much older now'

Actor R. Madhavan has firmly dismissed rumours of a possible 3 Idiots sequel, calling the idea “idiotic” and stating that both he and Aamir Khan are now far removed from the phase of life the film captured.

Madhavan made these remarks in an interview with Bollywood Hungama. Reacting to the constant speculation around a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster, Madhavan said, “A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great. But it also sounds far-fetched. All three of us, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and I, are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now? It is an interesting thought. But hardly conducive to a proper sequel. I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic."

Madhavan, who played Farhan Qureshi aka in the Rajkumar Hirani-directed film, has often spoken about how deeply the movie continues to resonate with audiences even today. However, he has maintained that revisiting the characters would risk diluting the legacy of a film that is widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s most influential works.

Aamir Khan, who was a part of the same interview, added “We had so much fun making that film! My character Rancho is the most popular character I’ve played. People still talk about Rancho. So yeah, I’d love to do a sequel. But no one has approached me,” he said.

Earlier, Sharman Joshi had also shared his reaction to the rumours and told Hindustan Times, “I so hope that happens, but I have not been informed yet. On more than a couple of occasions, there has been buzz that the 3 Idiots Sequel is happening. The last time the reports came, it turned out to be for an ad campaign. Let’s see, hopefully this time it’s true."

He added that the original creators know best, “I am in no position to know, but only the master, Raju sir, Abhijat (Joshi, writer) sir, and Aamir would be working on it if there is potential."
