Kate Winslet’s ‘Goodbye June’ shines and teaches how a mother should hold the full family together despite differences among her children and June played by Helen Mirren does it with so much grace. Different people have different ways of dealing with grief and loss and this film by Kate Winslet brings it out in a beautiful way. As kids to a mother who is suffering from cancer, it is equally tough on the caregivers.
The movie shows, how June (Helen Mirren) made sure that all the kids should sought out their differences before she dies. Kate Winslet who plays the role of the eldest kid in the family and the most sorted one. She promises her mother that she will look after her father and brother when she is gone. But her mother advises her to do it in a gentle way and not an overpowering way. That is the biggest lesson even when you are taking the responsibility, don’t make the others feel that you are doing a favour for them.
_‘__Goodbye June__’_ shows how a dysfunctional British family reunites during the Christmas season as their matriarch, June is suffering from cancer. June’s four adult children—Julia (Kate Winslet), Molly (Andrea Riseborough), Helen (Toni Collette), and Connor—gather at her bedside in a private hospital room in Cheltenham.
The movie can be compared to a contemporary Indian family dynamic as well where we bury our childhood grievances and we carry it on our shoulders and refuse to forgive and forget. Netflix’s ‘Goodbye June’ teaches us to let go and move on because the more we hold on to those grievances, we end up causing pain to ourselves. Written by Kate Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, and inspired by his grandmother’s passing, this film standouts because of the brilliant performances of each of the actors.
But truly the star of the film is not just Kate Winslet, the one who stands out is Helen Mirren who plays the role of June. Johnny Flynn who plays the role of 30 something son to June, is the one who is going through major pain because he is the one who lives with his aging parents. The film starts with Connor (Johnny Flynn) lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. We get to know that considering June’s deteriorating health conditions, the doctors take a decision to discontinue with chemotherapy and treat the patient with just palliative care.

The movie shows how all differences comes to an end just few days before Christmas and how June’s (Helen Mirren) wish is also fulfilled as she gets to see the family together. The story of Netflix’s ‘Goodbye June’ is engaging, slow, and a reflection for those who belong to big families with aging parents.
