Mallika Sherawat: 'All the A-lister heroes refused to work with me because I didn't compromise, they asked me to come to their house at night'

Mallika Sherawat made a big splash on the big screen with her seductive turn in the 2004 erotic thriller Murder. Post that, her career didn’t see the highs she would have expected. What went wrong? Two years ago in an interview, she revealed why she couldn’t reach the pinnacle of her career.

She said, “All the A-lister heroes refused to work with me because I wouldn’t compromise,” she told Hindustan Times.

The actress added, “It’s very simple — they like actresses who they can control and who will compromise with them. I am not that, my personality isn’t that. I didn’t want to subject myself to someone’s whims and fancies.”

When asked what she mean by compromise, she said, “Sit, stand, anything. If the hero calls you at 3 am and says, ‘Come to my house’, you have to go, if you are in that circle and if you are doing that film. If you don’t go, then you are out of the film.”

The actress often remained in the headlines for her personal and professional life. She has always been vocal about her career choices and the difficulties she faced on and off screen.

For the unversed,  Mallika Sherawat  was born Reema Lamba and she changed her name after entering Bollywood. She ran away from home to become an actress and she took her mother’s surname Sherawat as she supported her career.

She tied the knot with Karan Singh Gill in 1997, however, they parted ways after a year. Talking about facing Bully in the industry, she told Bollywood Bubble, “A certain section of the media was very… They bullied me and harassed me. And that really bothered me, because… And most of them were women. Men have never had problems with me. Men have always appreciated me. And I couldn’t understand why these women are so against me, and so nasty to me. And that made me leave the country for a while because I wanted a break. But today they are more accepting of me, and they are more loving, which I’m really enjoying.”
