"After Petta, I have Indian 2 and another Telugu film. I can't work on more than two or three projects in a single calendar year," India Today quoted him as saying.

The shooting for Haasan's magnum opus will commence from 14 December and will also mark the reunion of the actor and director Shankar. The project will be financed by Lyca Productions, making this their second collaboration with Shankar after the blockbuster 2.0.

Indian 2 was first announced on the finale of Bigg Boss Tamil, hosted by Haasan. It will be a follow up of the Indian, which released in 1996. The actor will be reprising his role as Senapathy in the sequel.

Indian originally starred Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar in the lead roles along with Goundamani, Senthil, Nedumudi Venu, Kasturi, Sukanya, and Crazy Mohan as the supporting cast. Haasan essayed the role of a 70-year-old freedom fighter who turns vigilante to battle crime and corruption. He played a dual role of a father and son in the film.
