In an exclusive interview with Firstpost’s Lachmi Deb Roy, Samantha Ruth Prabhu talks to Firstpost in an EXCLUSIVE interview on how her role in Prime Video’s ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ is a welcome change in her filmography.
When stuntman Bunny (Varun Dhawan) recruits struggling actress Honey (Samantha) for a side gig, they are hurled into a high-stakes world of action, espionage, and betrayal. Years later, as their dangerous past catches up, the estranged Honey and Bunny must reunite and fight to protect their young daughter Nadia.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
Samantha, you are new to this universe, the Citadel universe. So just wanted to know what was it like, playing a woman spy and not just an ornament and thanks to the OTT and thanks to you. How do you see this welcome change in women’s role changing in cinema?
I think it starts with actors also. Like, for me, there is an immense responsibility now to play roles that show different facets of being a woman and there is a lot more representation of modern day woman in our cinema today.
So I think that I am pretty conscious of the roles that I pick. And this one is definitely a welcome change because we are used to spy movies and spy series where the man is doing all of the heavy lifting, and he’s at the centre of it all. So it is nice to be given equal, you know, ‘kind of equal’ time and in terms of action scenes in ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ which is a great thing. I hopefully, more layered characters are written for women.

And it’s a global series coming out of India. So what was your preparation, and was it a special pressure that you took on yourself? What was the physical training like?
Thanks to Raj & DK for offering me an action role because that was a shift that I didn’t see coming at all. I was always playing this girl next door cute (se) roles. I never thought that I can land a punch. It is a welcome change and it gives me more to explore. I think every time I work on a project there is a new facet that I discover and that I can tap into.
Raj & DK are hard task masters who will push you to deliver your best. And every actor wants the right push from the right people. They know what they are doing and I completely trust them.
How choosy are you with work?
Although the quantity of my work has reduced as compared to what I was doing a few years back, the quality of it is definitely increasing from one project to another. That is happening because I am choosing it correctly.
