EXCLUSIVE | Netflix's 'Maamla Legal Hai Season 2' actress Nidhi Bisht: 'Have done casting for a few TVF videos, understand stories and...'

Justice may be blind, but it definitely has a sense of humour at Patparganj District Court. After the first season of Maamla Legal Hai proved that courtrooms can be just as hilarious as they are dramatic, Season 2 expands this world with even more ajab (peculiar) cases, but with the gajab (amazing) team that everyone loved. The newly unveiled trailer offers audiences a sneak peek into the maamle (matters) to come, promising bigger battles, sharper wit, and even more delightful unpredictability.

Edited excerpts from the interview

Nidhi Bisht: You are a casting director, a writer, and an actor. Which is more challenging for you?

I’ll just reverse the order how you said for me. I have done casting only for a few TVF videos. But you can do good work even when you have less work. I’m an actor first and writer second and in between I’m a director. Casting comes naturally to me because I have done Theatre and I understand stories. But I really enjoy acting and playing different characters. How writers and directors see me and perceive me.
I don’t think you enjoyed my answer (laughs).

Anant: How much do you feel the characters have evolved and the season has evolved?

They have evolved a lot, and I’m extremely excited about that. Everybody had just set the field in season one, this time we are playing on it. A huge credit for this goes to the writers. The characters have genuinely evolved a lot, and it is so essential for a series or a film. I would not like to reveal much because I may end up giving spoilers. The equation and circumstances have evolved a lot in season two. The workspace has changed as well. Sujata now has a chamber of her own. Tyagi ji has become a judge.

What are the similarities between you and the character that you have played? Is there any quality about him that you wish you had?

Being able to humor any situation. I get very intense about life at times. This is the one thing that I have learned from Vishwas- to be a matter of fact, and not take everything to the heart. Don’t make an issue out of everything but try to solve it.

Nidhi: We have seen a lot of courtroom dramas. But we do not have enough courtroom comedies. How do you add humor to such serious situations?

I feel writing is the toughest job because Bhramma to wahi hai. More than being a courtroom drama, this is a court premise dramedy. We are talking about the everyday life of a court, and what happens outside the premises as well. There are a lot of district courts in Delhi. You will find so much of research material during your prep, and the writers of the show have given this story, a very consumable avatar. A major credit for this also goes to the casting, for selecting the right actors. We had the right guidance from Netflix that everything fell into place and everything happened very beautifully. Kusha has also joined us in the second season. It was difficult but fun. What else are we here for?

Anant: Ever since the OTT boom has happened, how much do you feel content has changed or evolved?

I think the diversity of it. We did not have a platter a few years ago. You can now enjoy every genre. From an actor’s point of view, we can perform better because of more characters. Audiences have also opened up a lot for us. I recently made a reel on Instagram with Kusha and realized that it was a different set of audience. We have been receiving so much love for that. Movies first arrive in Cinemas and then on OTT, so it has created a lot of clout for Content. And it has space for all kinds of stories.

Nidhi: We have seen such a variety of comedies in Hindi cinema over the last few decades. From Basu Chatterjee to Hrishikesh Mukherjee to Kader Khan to David Dhawan. What are the kinds of comedies that you like to watch?

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Personally speaking, I like to watch all kinds of comedies. Making people laugh is very difficult. All these filmmakers are my favourites. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Gol Maal and Chupke Chupke. The entire era of Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Dulhe Raja. I have laughed a lot watching these movies. And I had a small dream that I also get the opportunity to be in this direction. I saw Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron with my brother, and you will not be able to understand the politics of that movie as kids. You will not be able to understand this satire. The Mahabharata scene from the film is my all-time favorite scene. That film is my Bhagavad Geeta.
